Headlights bolted to bonnet?
Simon - 23/2/05 at 09:09 PM

Is it as silly as it sounds?

My understanding is that a light bar is usually used which runs across front of car, slightly behind top spring brackets.

I can't do that cos engine is in the way!

As I have a tilting front end (bonnet and nose have been joined together), and I'm concerned that in order to open bonnet, I would end up having to remove h/lights.

Obviously this isn't acceptable, so I'm thinking of thickening up the bonnet and laminating steel mountings to (inside) of bonnet. The lights will therefore tilt with bonnet.

Suggestions/comments please.

Thanks

rather than use one long bar either use a use a bar with a crank in it or use two short bars welded to the chassis. These will need bracing to triangulate bar or it will have no strengh.

Ulternative is to try 'frog eye' headlights like used on some classis cars. eg. triumph tr4.

Why not do what Ariel do with the Atom?

Mount the side or position lights at the front, and correct spacing etc etc to satisfy SVA and mount the headlights to the scuttle?

whatever you do, dont forget the lights must be a certain distance maximum from the edge of the car, and a certain distance apart. think the dims from edge is 400mm and apart is 450....... dont take those figures as gospel tho

Fozzie,

I sort of see it! Maybe need me eyes testing, maybe it's the pics

Is the h/light bracket, spring mount etc all one piece (ally?). Did you fabricate or have cast? Any better pics per chance.

Steve, yeah preesh that - already know where they are to go (positioned according to dims in SVA manual). Did make a test bar, but turns out I can't use it.

I reckon that so long as mounting is secure (ie satisfactory load spreader plating and good size metal bar mount) it should be ok.

Cheers chaps

Simon,
Yep they are a bit fuzzy, reckon its the glare from the polished ally that does it! lol
I will try again tomorrow!
Yep I did fabricate them with steel tubing, hopefully the next lot of pics will be clearer.
No problems with the SVA btw.
