Fuel tank senders
David Jenkins - 11/5/05 at 12:27 PM

Anyone know where I can get a fuel level sender that's different from the normal "swinging arm with a float on the end" type?

An internal tank baffle is stopping my sender from swinging properly, so I was thinking about using a vertical one (dip tube?) - throuble is, I've seen them somewhere but can't remember where it was!

I know the resistance range I need (10 - 180 ohms), which is a start...

Thanks,
David

bryn at allyfab got me one made up to suit my tank/gauge, it is the tube type, maybe worth giving him a call?

Ned.

I think some of the LandRover types are vertical.

I think you will find its only the landy ones with an "In Tank Pump", certainly ALL the Series, the 90/110's and early rangeys are all "arm" style. Its probably where they are petrol and injected (I think) they used in tank pumps, and the very late diesels.

I have used a Land Rover one S11a Lightweight Military one, and just bent the arm up and down like a castle battlements to shorten it.
Saw it in a book!... seems to work OK.. just a bit f trial and error on the bending!

The Landrover is indeed a vertical unit and a doddle to install.

Razman, i assume you have used a landy one. Can you recall the part number? My mate runs a land rover repair business and can get new parts very reasonably. Ill get a price if anyone can tell me the best type etc.

Can I confirm - I'm considering the dip tube type. This is a tube that goes straight down to the bottom of the tank, with a float that slides up and down that tube, either inside or outside.
I'm NOT looking for the swinging-arm-with-a-float type, as that's what I've got already and it's finding space a bit tight to swing properly.

Just looked at my invoice but unfortunately it just says 'fuel pump and sender unit' It was £139.00 too

David - It is indeed the dip tube kind - about 120mm diameter if memory serves, with six bolts around the top.

Sounds very much like you have an injection pump/sender, not a lot of use with carbs

You've got me there - I've got the new fangled injection thingies so I guess it wouldn't be ok for engines with carbs

AKAIK you can use an injection pump with carbs as long as you use a regulator. Im using a red top facet that i had on the shelf but will slow it down a lot. I wouldnt go out and buy an injection pump for a carb set up if i didnt already have one though.

I checked with my mate ref the sender unit. He has confirmed that all of the older landrovers (up to mid 90's defenders) use swing arm type senders. I wonder if yours (Razman) is one of the later injection types from a newish Disco or R.Rover. My mate knows a lot about the older ones (he re-chassis them etc) but doesnt get so many new vehicles in as they are mainly main dealer serviced etc. Sorry i cant assist further. You could try Britpart if you need to locate something.
