mad-butcher - 4/7/05 at 06:10 PM

hi guys need your help heres the basic set-up...Vikki green harness (should have bought a premier one) later sierra steering column switch gear (the type that have the thin wire thus requiring 2 relays)
problem no lights on & ignition on flash headlamps works brilliant
ignition on lights on dip beam on OK pull back to flash headlamps Both main and dip OK push forward to main i now loose dip A FAIL ON SVA...... more worrying is when I switch fog lamp on works ok on dip beam Push forward to main beam I loose the rear fog lamp cos dip isn't working ANOTHER SVA FAIL POINT
any-one got any ideas was thinking of wiring up a relay to take main beam power to activate dip beam but no idea how to wire it up and would it work and what type relay
,any thanks
tony

Are you saying that your dip beam lights go out when you switch to high beam, if so then that is correct I would have said, its only with twin headlamps that you keep both I think...

I'm just as confused the fog lamp needs to operate when head lamps are on so is wired into dip circuit so by having no dip when main is on you loose the fog. just checked my fiat van and i have main and dip on main beam...
heres the extract from sva reasons for failure
main beam cannot be turned off by operating one switch which at the same time leaves a dip beam
tony
confused you will be

Fog needs to operate with dip OR main or side for that matter, power from light feed before high/low beam swith not after, I think youll find there is a loop wire from lights on off on RH stalk to high/low on LH stalk

I've got the switch side of my foglight relay powered on the same circuit as the dash lights. Hence the fog can only be switched on when the dash is illuminated.

Dash is illuminated when the sidelights are on.

Sidelights are on with both dipped and mainbeam.

cheers guys found the problem it's with the vikki green harness this harness is the most expensive £20 i've ever saved
THE PROBLEM IS the 4 pins on sierra fog switch
[1]top = earth
[2]next down= illumination (side lights)
[3]next across = power for fog lamp
[4]to fog lamp
[3] This is the problem vikki green harness uses a spur off the dip beam so it only has power when dip beam is on..
Premier wiring however uses a bridge between [2] & [3]
just got to cut the dip wire out and bridge [2] & [3] problem solved
many thanks guys problem solved

Now I'm confused!!

My fog light works when the headlights are on (dip and main), but not when the side lights are on.

Have checked the SVA manual and can't actually find anything about when the fog light should work or shouldn't!

This SVA lighting lark does my head in!

Can anyone enlighten me?

Rich.

No neither can I , and I don't know how i've done mine
But my new Mondeo definatly allows fog lights with just sidelights, so I would think either would be fine.............

So the new Mondeo's still going well then, shouldn't you be decorating or something Colin

When I took mine for SVA in 2001 they checked that the light only worked when dip was on. When I took it for MOT last month they only checked that it went out when I switched from headlights to sidelights. The rules seem vague on this.
