Coil mounting

I don't know whether this question should go into 'chassis', 'engine' or here in 'electrics', but it will eventually involve volts and amps, so here goes!

I have a bog-standard book chassis with a 1660 X-flow engine. Now that I'm doing the wiring I want to put the ignition coil in a sensible place, near the distributor (right-hand side of the engine).

The problem is, there's not a lot of room! I could drill holes in the chassis and fit rivnuts to mount the coil, but they are important chassis members - and 13mm holes don't sound like a good idea...

I've had a few ideas, but I'd like to know what others have done.

As an aside, can coils be mounted horizontally? I believe that they're oil-filled, but I don't know whether there are any 'rules'.

cheers (and Merry Xmas)

David

see my pics - i mounted mine horizontally in the pedal box.

I cant see a problem mounting it inside the scuttle as long as you have a nice big hole for the eht cable with a grommet in it.

Dave

There are no real rules for the mounting of a coil, upside- down it doesn't really matter. The only real rules (if you can call them that ) are that the coil should not be mounted close to high temperatures, should be mounted away from moisture traps, should preferably be dry, ventilated, readily accessible and clean. Excesive distance from the distributor should be avioded.

But apart from that if you can get a king lead to it then thats where it goes.

Enjoy

I decided to follow the JFDI route...

The coil is now mounted on the diagonal next to the dizzy!

cheers,
