Battery size

I think most of us are concerned about wight.

Now, how small a battery can be to start the car without problems?

I'm building with a zetec 1.8, basic lights, and no more than this.

how small depends largely on your wallet!!!!

You can use gel type aircraft batteries which are very small indeed with no probs at all.

Remember the battery only has to start the car, the alternator is the critical bit when it comes to the supply for running everything like lights etc.

That's the point, but how much amps (battery) do I need to start the car?

As for the alternator, 40 amps should do it in a car with no accesories, no heater, etc... what do you thinkg?

40 amps should do it alternator-wise.

starting depends a lot on the type of starter, gear reduction ones need less than non gear reduction, but as to exact cranking amps, not sure.

I use a DMS red top 30 in my grasser, and I know ultima use these to start 6 ltr chevy v8's with no problems. These are 26 Amp-hour, weigh 9 kg, but I'm not sure of the max cranking amps, I think around 400 amps but could well be wrong on that one. The one in the grasser will spin the engine over seemingly for ever, and has never gone flat despite extended periods out of use, totally reliable.

Well that's what I need to hear, it really doesn't matter how many amps

BTW, I'm using the zetec with an old x-flow starter.

In my indy I'm gonna use a little tiny battery that is around 5kgs and costs around £90.... not sure of the cranking ability but It used to turn my 6.3 litre Ultima over so I doubt it'd have a problem with a 1.8.
