Rev counter Calibration ?

I have a set of telemetric guages, and I am wondering about how best to accuratly calibrate the Rev Counter.

at present I have no confidence that the guage is reading correctly and since I have spent more than I can realy afford on the engine I want to run it in properly and not wish to over rev the engine

what is the best way to check the engine speed?

the timing light i have cannot be set to say 2000 rpm, it only flashes as fast as the engine is running. is there one that can be preset?

your thoughts gentlemen would be greatly appreciated.

If it's set to the correct number of cylinders it shouldn't need calibrating. If you still have a sierra gauge you could try comparing it to that.

The problem is that i had the guage incorrectly wired and it was reading 3000rpm with the engine not running, I played with the adjuster before realising the real problem. so it is me that cocked up and that is why i am not sure about the calibration.

a good multimeter should have an rpm setting.

is there someone local you could borrow one from? maybe a friendly local garage would lend you one for the afternoon for beer tokens

I know it's not a perfect solution but I adjusted the pot on mine while the engine was at a warm idle and I knew it would be around 900-1,000 rpm.

I knew it was originally reading high as it would rev it to around 7-8K.

Then when I took it for SVA I checked it against the noise/emmisions equipment while he was checking it for the tests and it was pretty much spot on/perhaps reading just a tad high.

Good enough for now until I find someone with proper gear.

an multimeter is able to measure alternator revs....

i think not continous volts frequents..


when my engine idles and i use my Hz seeting on mymulitmeter it says 0,125 in the 2K max settings..

= 125Hz.

when i put it in the power take point /hole in house..(don't know the name) it saus 0,046 should be 50hz sow that's fine!

but if 1 cilinder is making 125hz it would mean 250revs second = 15000rpm..

sow there should be an trick....

i measured this with the black pin to chasis and the red one at the 'to ground' place on one coil..

maybe its the spark noise or something..
