I am writing to you from a company called Ole Buhl Racing Ltd, a supplier of motorsport electronics. Please permit me to give you a short introduction to our company and then tell you a little about our products.

EFI Technology srl is a company which specialises in advanced electronics for motor racing and high performance road cars. The company was founded in 1985, initially to design and develop the early electronic engine management systems for Cosworth.

Today, EFI Technology remains one of the market leaders in the development and production of high tech engine control systems both for motorsport and high profile sports cars and motorbikes. EFI Technology manages and supports the complete project, from customer specification through hardware and software development, to production and testing of final products.

Ole Buhl Racing (OBR) has been having international success for over 15 years. This year alone OBR-supported teams have won in the British, Danish, Swedish and Asian Touring Car Championships, European Le Mans Series as well as achieving very high levels of success in World Touring Cars, FIA GT’s and Super Motard to name just a few.

In addition to our EFI Technology engine management products we also supply the highest quality data logging equipment ( 2D ), wiring solutions, engine and chassis sensors.

The main reason for contacting you is to announce the launch of our new Euro 4 ECU. It’s the first of our range of ECU’s to be built around a PowerPC processor.

A brief list of hardware features is provided below:

· Controls engines with up to 8 cylinders (6 and 8 cylinder engines with wasted spark ignition)

· Internal wide band NTK Lambda controller

· 11 switches

· Internal Drive-by-wire throttle control, twin throttle bodies

· 2 individual CAN links

· On-board data logging having 8 Mb memory capacity

The corresponding software will allow the user to make full use of the Euro 4’s impressive potential.

· Closed loop and self learn lambda control

· Drive-by-wire control for twin throttles

· Pit lane speed limiter

Complete Package

The functionality of the Euro 4’s design allows it to act as an ECU and a comprehensive data logger all in one unit. The impressive range of sensor inputs allow for a multitude of inputs to the system. An example configuration is shown below:

Note: All channels can be logged simultaneously in the ECU’s data logger at frequencies up to 200Hz.

Cost

The Euro 4 is set for release at the start of January next year. At that time we expect the base version of the ECU to retail at around £600.00+ VAT. Discounts are available for repeat customers and large orders.

Optional extras will be available at additional costs, e.g. the traction control strategy and the data logger. As the manufacturer of the car you would be able to offer these up-grades as extras, making a profit on activating them.

The versatility of the Euro 4 ECU makes it well suited to projects with a number of engine options. Each engine option would have its own map, leaving the user to simply programme the ECU with the correct configuration. This way the car manufacturer has just one engine management software, and enjoys support for all cars from one supplier.

Something at the back of my mind tells me that he has/had a tie up with Motec. If this is Motec derived, then it is very good, indeed.

OBR have a poor website!

I remember seeing this EFI brand at last years Autosport show. I think they also do emulators and software that let you re-programme stock ECUs.

If you read the lit it says the founder jumped ship from Magneti Marelli (made all early cosworth management)

At £600+vat the price seems ok and the do have a genuine motorsport background which is proof the product works.

The only thing i would be worried about is the software front end. It doesn't look particularly friendly compared to some other systems. Which might be fine for an F1 technician but the average locost dude who would like to do their own mapping?

Also the tech/software back up may be a bit of a struggle. They (EFI) are all Italian and had trouble talking to them on the stand, let alone over the phone!

Worth a look though. Including a mappable ECU in a locost kit could be a nice idea.

The Megasquirt is pretty simple to use, and fits the locost ethos much better!
