Just about identified everything on my main loom now with the exception of one of the relays, I think. (Tricky job working from diagrams that dont
seem to match the loom too well!) Here comes the obvious question but its been puzzling me for an hour or so...
Attached is a picture of 2 of the 3 relays on the entire loom. The black one has 3 terminals and is the flasher relay (connected to the flasher switch
and hazard switch). There is one missing from the loom, but I am sure that it would be the wiper relay (another 3 terminals connected to the wiper
fuse and switch).
Its the red one that puzzles me at the moment. Its got 4 terminals on it. A black/green wire and a brown/yellow wire both connected to the connector
with the side lights and dipped beam lights in, but not in their circuit. (Not the dipped/main changeover switch, there is no relay for this anyway on
the escort). The brown wires (which I belive are earth?), one goes to the wiper relay, and the other one (which splits into 2 at the red relay) to the
main loom (where a load of brown wires interconnect) and back to the wiper switch. These wires arent in any of the diagrams I have...
I cant see this relay anywhere on the diagrams that I have. And I am puzzled to what it could be! As far as I can see the hazards work through the
normal flasher relay and the red relay is not connected to the flasher circuit in any way that I can see.
Any help appreciated!

My Mk2 had a heated rear screen... apparently an option. I found a relay similar to this but with a fuse sticking out of the top?? Could this be an
option.
I know exactly what you mean about wires and colours not matching up. I had great fun over a number of evenings stripping all the crap out and
changing to modern fuse box etc.
Not for the rear screen either as far as I can tell. I pulled the circuit for that out last night (it still had the switch attached so was easy to
find). It had its own fuse as you say, but it was 3mm cable all the way to the rear of the car and on a 35A switch, so it wont have needed a
relay....
I am doing as you did, but really need to find out what everything is before i pull everything apart!.

Is'nt it the relay to vary wiper speed.
Cheers,
Bob
I dont think so...
The wiper relay is the one thats no longer connected to the loom according to my wiring diagrams. Its got a black/violet, brown/white and a brown wire
going to it and is connected to the wiper fuse...
This is why I am confused. The relay doesnt appear on my wiring diagrams at all. Only thing I thought it might be was for a towbar (often need an
extra relay for the extra power) but its part of the original loom and there are no extra wires at the rear.
Someone must have an idea...
PS If anyone has a hazard switch out of the escort I would be most grateful for one!! Its got a very odd plug that fits into it by the looks of it!
(Assuming I have worked it all out correctly)
Any chance it could be a lights off/ignition off relay? My sierra loom has a red relay that de-energises the light circuit when you swith off the
ignition leaving just the side lights on? Dunno if this helps?
I take it there's no way you can test the loom and pull the relay to see if it affects anything?
I don't think it was introduced before the Mark II's disappeared, but could this be a dim dip relay?
Google...google...google...aha...

If your Escort has a wiper delay (marked on the column stalk, plus you have a large red relay like a flasher relay) then this will work fine with
the BL motor. Its wiring isn't detailed in the Haynes manuals, so I can't help if you don't have one but want to add one.
That answer your question??
What *do* they teach at Warwick nowadays?

Cheers guys Turns out there are 2 wiper relays then.
Dave, I only have the wiring diagrams I was sent from someone on here, they are for the Ghia model, but no idea which year etc..
Steve. Star! I had tried google, but obviously didnt type the right thing! Thank you very much indeed. That web page is really good as well, will help
me chack I have identified everything correctly. What are we being taught? Not how to use google thats for sure!
Those wires which I thought were for a wiper relay (they have a relay plg on the end) are actually the wiper park wires (gleaned from that web
article)... oops!
Cheers guys
