hi all. forgive the noob question, im new to this lark.

for the rear lights on my car i have 4 connectors on my loom:
-earth
-side lights
-brake lights
-indicators

and i have seperate brake and indicator lights with the following

brake:
-earth
-side
-brake

indicators:
-earth
-indicators

now since theres 5 wires there to go into 4 i assumed that you can wire the 2 earths together into a shared one (wrongly?)

ive tried this and cant get the indicators to come on at all when hazards are on, and when i short the brake pressure switch one of the brake lights is very bright, one is dim, and for some unknown reason the 2 indicators are on very dim too.

is there another way i should be wiring them up?

also, my r1 fuel pump doesnt make a noise if i wire it to the battery, have i blown it up?

i hate this electrics stuff.

Sounds like you've got an earth problem or two of the side/ brake wires crossed.

You are right in assuming all the earths are commoned, as are the two side light (three including the number plate) & brake feeds. Are the earths all connected to the loom earth or the chassis?

Does sound like an earth problem, is the battery negative well connected to the chassis?

All earth's for each side of the rear lights can go to one point.

If you literally connect the pump to the + and - of the battery does anything happen?

Also, how are you fixing the earths to the chassis??

Its almost certainly an earthing problem with poor grounding the most likely cause. Suggest you take you earth feeds and temporarily strap them to the batter earthg terminal. Se what happens then.

all the wires are connected to the loom earth which is in turn connected to the chassis at the rear of the car.
connecting a temporary wire from the light earth all the way to the battery -ve made them work straight away, so i definately have some sort of earthing issue.

i ground down some powdercoating before connecting a spade terminal by a nut+bolt through the chassis, i'll try doing that a bit better.

as for the fuel pump, when i first got it i connected it directly to the battery very quickly and it made a vibrating noise. now it doesnt make any noise and heats the wire up. i think it might be dead!

Pump could be dead, is it carbed?? or fuel injection?

The stop tail light design is a bit poor - it allows you to put the bulb in either way round. The brake light that is dim is actually lighting up the tail light fillament. Take the bulb out, rotate through 180 degrees, reinsert.

You can wire the earths together for the stop/tail and indicator bulbs. They, together with the fuel pump, have their earth routed to the chassis rather than to the battery. For the sake of 2 metres of black wire to linkl it up directly to the battery rather than to the chassis, I think this is a bit poor. Get a length of wire and link the rear earthing point straight to the battery. If it works then your earthing is bad. You have got the front of the loom connected to the chassis haven't you? The -ve feed to the starter motor should be good enough.
