The aldon ignitor units that replace the points under the dizzy cap, are these effectively a VR sensor?

Its a magnetic sensor combined with an integrated amplifier this connects to the coil and seems to work pretty well I have had them fitted to my Range Rover and a 4 pot Land Rover. Having said that the one in the Rangie caught fire for no discernable reason and took the coi out, possibly the coil shorted and took the aldon out I don't know!
