Fuel gauge NEEDED

Firstly, sorry if this should be in the wanted part.
Basically, I was on the way home from a mate's house last night when I ran out of fuel.
Admittedly my fault for not dipping the tank before
I left, but I foolishly assumed £15-20 of fuel would last a whole lot longer than it did.
Basically, I'm no longer a happy bunny having been
stood on the side of the M40 in the rain with the missus whilst waiting for a friend to arrive with some motion potion. So, is there a simple/easy but
not overly expesive way of getting a fuel gauge, other than buying a gauge and sender from vdo/smiths etc?

Hi,
first thing is, do you have a sender/hole for a sender in your tank??
if not that could be a problem.
what about a low fuel warning light in stead of a gauge, may be cheaper to do.

As far as i know, the tank is a standard plastic MK(?) one. There's no hole that I've seen so far.

If you want a simple gauge, buy a boat tank gauge.
They are simply a spiral float with a gauge at the top.
You will only need to cut one hole into the top of the tank and drop it in.

Ideally it need to be visble from the drivers seat. I'll be making a boot soon, so the tank'll be covered.

I don't think there is a simple way around this, you reaaly need a guage and a sender, and if the tank dosen't have a hole for a sender you
will need to cut one.

Bungee a petrol can into the engine bay / luggage area.
When you run out of juice, get out, top up from the "reserve tank" and head for the nearest petrol station.

That was the first thing I did when I got home! I'll be building space for one into the new boot.
