LED R1 tail lights with built in indicators
Hammerhead - 2/9/06 at 01:40 PM

I have adapted a pair of R1 LED tail lights to have LED indicators inside.

Do you think they will pass sva?

Pics are in my archive (had brain drain and forgot how to show images)

Can't see why they wouldn't pass - as longs as the radius' etc. are met (which they should be, because they're off a boke anyway), and the viewing angles are correct (ditto).

However, they look really nice (good effort!), so there's bound to be something wrong! How about fitting some cheap units for SVA and then swapping them out afterwards?

i'm sure no-one would do such a thing

I meant if there's ever a change in legislation, of course!

It would be a shame not to be able to use the lights though - they do look very good. Would it be worth taking them to an SVA tester to see what they think?

Is the brake circuit a different led or do they just get brighter?

If they get brighter then it will fail sva as they have to be seperate bulbs/leds

think the leds are duel filament. But if they are ok for yamaha shouldnt they be ok for sva?

There is no such thing as a dual filament led - the tail & brake sections are just switched through a resistor to get the differing light level. I have heard that this is an SVA fail but I hope not as I am using leds on my car too

At the Scottish bike show last year I saw a bike with LED indicators in the brake light. They showed red when the brake was pressed or rear light was on but on the outer sides when you indicated orange arrows flashed, if you get what I mean? I had a word with the sales people whoever they were, can't remember, and they weren't road legal despite their best attempts. Looked real good too.
