dizzy with points
jabbahutt - 12/9/06 at 06:11 PM

Hi

I've read the threads and must admit to being more confused than ever so hopefully someone can help.

I'm fitting a 2.0 litre pinto with the injection system ditched and a points dizzy fitted. I take it it's points as there is only a single fly lead from the dizzy with a plug connector on it (to the coil?) On the side is what looks like a capacitor with a lead going into the dizzy and inside it looks a bit like an old watch?. The car has a vicki green loom

Question time, as it's a points dizzy I take it I don't need an amplifier as mentioned on numerous threads, just a coil and dizzy?

If that's right does the vicki green loom have a ballast resistor or will I fit a 12V coil.

If that's right what type of coil as I'll probably end up making myself sound like a right idiot talking to the motor factors, is there more than one type of 12v coil for a points based pinto and if so which type do I need?

thanks for any help you can give and if you can keep your answers in lay mans terms I'd be grateful as you can probably guess I haven't a clue.

Cheers

Junk the points! Get either an Aldon Ignitor and their coil or a standard 12V coil from a motor factors easy to set up no points grief and not too expensive in the region of £80. Or se if you can pick up a secondhand Luminition set up, again use a standard coil 12V.

Points will be a PIA in the long run and if you start messing with compression ratios and things a good powerful spark is necessary to get you going quickly.

It is also possible to pick up the later electronic dizzy for the Pinto on here or on ebay this is good if you get the whole lit with amp and coil you can possibly swop with someone who is doing a megajolt set up as they only need the dizzy to drive the oil pump.

Good luck

Why not just go megajolt straight away?

I intend to upgrade in the future but I just need to know if the set up mentioned will work without anything extra

dufus question: what exactly is megajolt?

Yes it will. Points dizzy, standard 12v coil not an electronic one, no ballast resistor, ignition live to the + terminal on the coil, - terminal to the points. - terminal also to rev counter.
Bobs yer uncle and you can stutter about a bit.

Two diiferent types of points dizzie used on these engines - Motortcraft (aka Fomoc/Autolite/Ford) or Bosch.

Important to know which you have as the points gap is very different -- Fomoc is 0.023" to 0.027" and the bosch if I remember correctly is 0.015" (somebody check this please).

With the Fomoc dizzie always set new points to the top end of the gap tolerance and check after 15 minutes running because they tend to close up as the heel of the points beds into the cam -- also remember to grease the can very lightly.

Fomoco were usually black plastic caps and Bosch were brown and the Fomoco is a lot taller if I remember right.

The Vicky Green loom doesn't have a ballast resister so make sure you get a standard 12v coil. You can pick them up on Ebay a lot cheaper than a motor factor.
