Ignition - help please !
iscmatt - 5/11/06 at 05:44 PM

I must be doing something wrong !

I have just installed the ECU ignition unit on a Pinto 2.0 OHC , but although the starter motor whizzes round, I get no other respponse.

From my amateur eye it seems that there is no power getting to the dizzy.

Any ideas please as to what I haven't done right ?

Have you tried taking a spark plug out, or using a spare one to check if there's a spark or not?

I haven't tried that - but will.

However, if the dizzy is working shouldn't the petrol pump also work ? I should have explained that this is the first time that I am trying to start the engine so at the moment don't even have petrol reaching the carb!

i assume you're using an electric pump?

Been a few years since i wired a pinto... is yours the ecu with 6 wires or closer to 20?

Maybe a better description of what your running would help?

You say you don't have petrol reaching the carb, is it an electrical issue thats related?.

As far as I knew all Carb'd Sierras had a mechanical pump.

You could also fill the float chamber with petrol to try and rule that out as well.

I originally thought it was a mechanical pump but then read somewhere that to test the petrol pump you could turn the starter motor... From this info I assumed that the dizzy somehow turned the petrol pump?

From the advice received this seems unlikely so my best bet now is to prime the float chamber - after I've checked to see that I'm getting a spark.

When turning the ignition and starter motor would I expect to hear the dizzy working ?

PS. To answer JoelP, it is the 6 wire ECU.

The pinto fuel pump is a mechanical pump that works off the dizzy drive shaft
except injection engines Jacko

That would explain everything, as I think my problem is that either the battery is not strong enough to engage the fly wheel or the starter motor has a problem. Once I get this sorted out I should be able to get the dizzy going and therefore get petrol through to the carb.

Its easy when you know what you're doing - but I'm learning !!

what exactly you mean by that?

does the engine turn, if not, it ain't ever gonnar start.

the starter motr tuns the engine which menas the cam, crank, dizzy all move in unison. the mechanicla fuel pump will me moving either by riding on a lobe on the cam or as said here on the dizzy shaft but I suspect that info. could be wrong (would need to look it up in haynes)

You sound a bit unsure of what the problem is.

Do you have an electric or mechanical pump? Even if the battery is low it should feed an electric pump. Obviously a mechanical pump will only work if the engine is turning over.
