Otherwise how else do I attach it so it doesn't fly off? (have steel wheels if that makes a difference)
Placing the pick up on a wheel means your speedo reading will be affected by corners.
I was going to try and take mine off the crown wheel. Don't know how mag pickups are affected running in oil ?
Cant you put it on the pinion shaft or Propshaft? I think in the drum is a bit of a hostile environment.

re: corners - not too worried about that as it will be tesed on the rollers at SVA (it is back up in case I do not complete my motor driven speedo in
time).
re: prop, the wheels size would need to be 1/4 to give correct speed - I donlt think bike speedos cater for 7 inc dia. wheels
wher have other folks mounted theirs?
Mines stuck to my diff flange with pickup mounted on a braket on the diff casing.
I have fitted mine to the drive flange inside the drum, Not tried it on the road yet but i can not see it being a problem, just means when you wheel
spin it will read higher but normal driving should be ok, not going to be doing lots of miles to get covered in brake dust so a quick clean out every
now and then will do me just fine.

Just to add a bit of fuel to the fire, I spent the weekend playing around with my RRV blade clocks as I do not want to buy a speedo healer.
185/60/13 wheels with a 3.62 diff require 9 magnets on the prop, using an ABS sensor as the pickup wired to earth
So I would look at mounting magnets on the pinion, get the number of magnets right and save a few quid.
nb/ this related to around 36 magnets if I had hung them on the halfshaft/wheel.

Mate used 2 p'clips with cylindrical magnets in them, bolted under the heads of 2 prop bolts. They are still fine, and work very well. The p clip
stops the magnet flying out, and for added safety they are epoxied in also.
