Hi all.
I am having problems on my x/flow alternator, i am doing 2-3 races and they decide to pack up I am replacing them with one from a motor factors at
the moment but am unsure of the problem i am thinking that we are putting them under a bit to much load?? Any ideas appreciated.

Could be one of two things
(1) You are over revving the alternator --- cure fit a smaller crank pulley.
Or more much likely
(2) The spades in connection block at the rear of the alternator are arcing ---- this very common and will give exactly the symptoms you
describe.
Clean the blade on the alternator with a nail board/emmery-- if you have a Lucas ACR alternator remove the black plastic cover for access to do
this.
Renew or crimp in the connectors in the teminnal block connector to ensure threy bight into the blades.
Fit a micra one anyway, better made, smaller, easy swap.
We ran one all season last year on our crossflow and its still going ok, still have it if you want one as we are running with no alternator at all
this season,

is it mechanical or electrical failure?
oeverreving should not matter to the electronics.
if revved too fast, (over 12,000 rpm) then rotor starts to come apart.
as for putting on a load, unless you have loades of extra spot lamps, a thumping stereo on when racing, thaere shjould be no additional load.
but cheapest would be to source a bigger alternator pulley or a smaller crankshaft pulley - this would help possible water pump caviatation.
Viatron, I'm thinking of putting a smaller alternator on my crossflow Westfield, is the Micra one an easy swap?
Starting xflos and other kent engines has always been a major problem, fitting smaller battery probably not adviseable.
Am not sure how you can check, but I was told a while ago about Locost racers cooking their alts and starters due to the heat from the exhaust ?

Having problems with my Xflow alternator, Broke down this morning , the only symptom was the indicators stopped working about a minute before engine died . Fitted a recon alternator last Monday and checked it was charging , have done about 40 miles since. Suspect alternator may be overheating , perhaps over revving, can anyone suggest a smaller pulley without paying Demon Thieves prices . Could be I just got a duff alternator? Have tested wiring , battery etc and found no fault
Just managed to get a larger pulley that with a bit of work will fit and hopefully slow the alternator down . I have only had problems since car was set up on rolling road and I'm now able to use maximum revs . May have to lower the rev limit or behave when I'm driving?
