I went into ford yesterday to get a price for bottom radiator hose for a mondeo he asked me reg number then chassis number, i told him it was for a kit car, he said they dont do parts for kit cars anymore.

Unfortunately most parts places now work from VIN and registration numbers due to the manufacturers (mainly French ones) constantly changing the design of parts through the prduction life of the vehicle.

I've got an old pug (very early 106) and even with the vin, the reg, the old part and the whole car just outside the door I still normally have to chose between 3 different parts for most things

and every time it will be the one that's out of stock

ford stuff is easier, its just the parts guys don't know what they are looking for - so now I just tell them a car model + age that should have the bits, then I find the bit I want on the screen myself and tell them the part number
