hi can i use the standard crank position sender on the 20xe engine with my megajolt set up

You might be able to use the sensor but you can't use the same trigger wheel. Megajolt needs at 36-1 wheel but the std XE one is 60-2.

The trigger wheel is mounted on the crank, inside the block on the XE so you would need to dismantle the bottom end of the engine to replace the original trigger wheel with a 36:1.

Much easier to mount a trigger wheel on the crank pulley and use the Ford sensor which was designed for the EDIS.

I am using a MSnSE on an XE and take it that I have to fit another wheel then?

No you can use the std 60/2

Not if the MSnSE is using an EDIS module. If its running the coils directly then you can use the OE wheel and sensor.

Interesting comment. But where did you find this info??I'd like to read a bit more about it. I find some of the info on the ms efi sites a bit muddled through and you have to sift out what bits of info are relevant to your own installation.

If you are using an EDIS with your Megasquirt then the VR (crank) sensor connects to the EDIS not the MS. The EDIS sends a square wave to the MS which return another square wave the properties of which tell the EDIS what advance to use.

You don't have to use an EDIS module for ignition but I was converting from Megajolt so it seemed a sensible enough idea to keep the EDIS. I'm on the ins and outs of directly driving the coils but for wasted spark you have to make some mods to the standard board.

You do indeed have to work out what info is relevant to your installation. Have you got an MS yet? (This seems to have taken the thread off at a tangent)

The Megasquirt has provision for all sorts of trigger wheel patterns, including the Bosch 60-2.

The EDIS will work only with a 36-1 wheel, as that's how Ford designed it and it's not possible to change the software within the unit.

Therefore if your Megasquirt is using an EDIS module for ignition, you must use a 36-1 wheel. If you use the built in coil driver(s) you can use any wheel that the MS software supports.
