Anyone know how the Ford immobilisers work?
mr henderson - 31/10/07 at 06:48 PM

I'm currently dismantling a Mondeo which is fitted with the Ford PATS immobiliser system. The key has a chip which is read by a transceiver by the ingnition switch. Four wires run from this unit but I can't at the moment see where they go, and can't find similar wires on the ECU plug.

I would like to keep this system, and certainly need to keep the ECU, so if anyone can tell me where to look for the other ends of these wires I would be grateful (the unit, unlike the others on the steering column, is not connected through a multi-way plug, the wires disappear into the main loom)

hi check how many pins the ecu has either 60 pins or 104 pins the immo cannot be bypassed i can get you a diag and tell you what to do i am a self employed specialist in automotive electronics so i should know hopefully

I'm not tnear the workshop at the moment, so can't go and check, but I believe it will be the 104.

I don't actually need to bypass the immobiliser as I will be using both the ECU and the ignition switch etc. WHat I do need to do is to be able to cut the wires at the steering column so that I can remove it from the car, then reconnect them later, the question being, reconnect them to where?

Thanks in anticipation

the pats unit around the lock goes to the ecu it changes colour inside the loom so you will trace them from the pats plug to the ecu

That's what I was afraid of, but I hoped that Ford hadn't been that cunning. Still, at least I know now that it is worth doing
Thanks William

it could be 60 pin eeciv or 104 pin eecv on that year does it have variable inlet tract butterflies

It's definitely EEC V, not too sure about the variable inlet tract butterflies

Auto, which is another reason why I need to keep the ECU

i better go remember and keep the diagnostic skt and the spare keys if you get a fault you will req all keys to reprogram

hi,your pats wires go from ingnition swicth transponder to a pats module located behind the dash on the crash bar then to the ecu.they dont change colour until the pats module.one colour in another out.if i have the correct picture (as there are a couple of variations depending on build date)it s pins 15,16 at the ecu (blue, grey respectively).hope this helps
