Third Brake Light Options
charlierevell - 7/2/08 at 08:03 PM

Hi All....
After being followed by a mate the other day I've decided I could do with a high level 3rd brake light.

At present the side lights are always on which detracts from the brake lights at dusk. They seem ok in the day and ok when its dark, its just that in between hour or so...

What are my options for high level lights mounted to the roll bar? And who can i get them from? I've had a look and had no real luck searching!

Can i just zip tie the cable up the roll bar and tap into the existing rear lights?

What have you tried?

Thanks all....

thats what i did..i used a vauxhall (led interior one) and used a small bit of half round ali tube and fixed the light to the half tube (so the light fixes to the outside and the curve follows the rollbar) and because its led the wire is so thin a couple of bits of black leccy tape to the inside of the rollbar..then used a couple of jubilee clips to fix the round half ali tusbe to the rollbar..sprayed the whole thing black and it looks pretty good

I SVA'd mine with a third brake light, after SWIMBO nearly drove into the back of me in traffic! The lights on the rear arches just can't be seen by tin tops close up in traffic!

This was bought from SVC I think, an ex Jag unit?

Then, when I fitted the boot box, I bought an LED one off the bay, and rivnuted it to the roll bar. I did make one significant mistake when trying to feed the wire through the roll bar though, to keep things neat. The smaller the hole, the longer it is going to take to feed the wire through!

I've seen one for bikers that has a LED stop/tail bulb with a wireless link to a Battery powered LED strip that you can stick to your helmet, as a high level light for bikers.

It might save any unsightly runs of cabe up the roll bar, just stick the LED strip on and insert the stop/tail bulb

Just found something similar on ebay:Link

Mounted one on my roll bar after a couple of near misses. Made a pair of mounting blocks by placing a piece of ally bar in a lathe using four jaw chuck , the ally was mounted across the jaws, Bored though the bar and opened it out until the "hole" was the same diameter as the roll bar then refitted the 2 halves in line with chuck then drilled and countersunk them. Driiled and tapped roll bar to suit , jobs a goodun

I cut a slot in my roll bar, welded in a compensation plate, and inset an LED strip.
Wire goes down the inside of the roll bar so is not seen.
It's held in with sticky fixers.

See I like that look, but dont want to cut into the roll bar. And dont have the kit to weld it back up to compensate.

Which light have you used and could it be zip tied/bracketed on?

Car Builder Solutions do them

this may be a bit overkill but they will be seen, rain lights fitted into rollbar wired to the brakes

It's the same as the top one on the CBS link but mine is clear and only shows red when lit.

It needs some sort of housing as the back of it is not pretty.

Now the rainlight idea i did have... but thought they may be a little bright!

Will they run off the standard circuit, tapped off the standard light?

Are there many under £100 mark floating about?

Have you seen the one that Worx has fitted to the MNR he has been working on. It may be worth dropping him a message to find out what he used etc.

While they aren't FIA approved (AFAIK) the LED clusters sold by Maplins look identical to the ones I've seen sold by 'proper' racing shops. They are intended for outdoor signs so are very weatherproof.

£10 for these

I'd try wiring two in series (they are rated 9.6v) for a bit less brightness but twice the area.

I bought a high level light from my local motor factors and drilled the roll bar and used rivnuts to hold it in place with the wire running down inside the rb
