Starter problems
Lars - 16/3/08 at 06:57 PM

I have today made an exhaust system for my zetec, by cutting and welding the the original mondeo system.

Problem is that I forgot to fit the starter before doing this, and the exhaust pipe now pretty much touches the starter.

The starter is the usual 1.8CVH starter.

Am I right in thinking that the starter will not be able to cope with the heat of the exhaust at that range?

Basically I am quite happy with the exhaust and don't really want to cut it again.
Is there another way round?

I'd risk it.
It all gets pretty hot down their on a run so unless it's actually touching, I don't think it will hurt.

I think I have 1-2mm max.

I guess a new starter wont cost much if worst comes to worst.

Is there enough room to put some exhaust wrap around the tube or if not can you fit a thin s/steel shield over the starter.

I was thinking about this too, but it would definitely touch then.

Would it therefore be worth using exhaust wrap?
Never used exhaust wrap, would this be much cooler than the pipe and a tiny gap?

I'd thought that exaust wrap would be good, BUT... if it's touching it may conduct heat rather than sheild it?

Would it be possible to direct som air flow to the hot area, with an aditional small alu sheet metal or similar+

id remake the exhaust header.

if its that close that it might touch, then its far too close.

An Exhaust manifold can get very very hot, and the last thing you want it doing is melting some wiring...

im not saying you are, but i think its better to do something right, rather than a bodge and hope for the best.

the day you go out for a drive and get stuck in the middle of know where - that will be the day you wish you had not left the exhaust so close! ( and then it will rain too ! )

I agree, and that is what I have just done.
I now have about 25-30mm, but will probably still fit exhaust wrap and a shield.

I think any other solution probably would have taken just as long.

Many thanks for everyone's help.
