hi guys, i am trying to get my megajolt to link upto the laptop but cant seem to do it. is there ant specific way? im lost!
can anyone help?
thanks
rob
How are you connecting it to the laptop, are you using a usb to serial convertor. Are you sure the serial cable is staright through and not a null
modem cable which look similar but are wired differently.
A bit more info required I think is needed.
Rich
sorry, im using a straight through comms cable connected to a usb - comms lead.
when i try and click update configuration it says unable to communicate with serial port!!
is that a bit more info?
thanks
rob

Have you checked in the system properties that the USB-Serial converter is using COM1?
Sometimes it just picks a free COM port that isisn't being used already, certainly the old versions of Megajolt never recognised other ports
being used, not sure if newer versions do.
ok how the hell do you do that? i feel so dumb!
in megajolt tune
Tools
Options
pick a com port
set your computor to use that port for your usb device.
Hi Rob
You need to configure the usb converter to a serial port in the comms menu for megajolt and also on your PC, i cant remember the full details of the
PC options but had the same problem with someone else using a USB adaptor and it was the PC end that didnt match the serial port selected in the
megajolt menu.
Paul
Tranna do this from memory because i've got vista now,
Basically you've got to get into Device Manager (used to tbe right click on MyComputer and then properties)
Then scroll down to "Ports (COM&LPT)"
The USB adapter should be in there, right click on that and properties..
Then in the window that pops up there should be a tab "port settings"
Then in the advanced button on that there should be the option to select which COM Port it uses.
Hope you can follow that
or try the differant com ports in mjl untill one talkes to the pc
ok it says that the usb is connected to comms port 8! does the megajolt go upto 8?
Yes mate it goes upto 10, Tools > Configurator Options and drop down to choose your com port, with those usb leads it can differ each time you plug
it it as well.

mine goes upto com4 then has /dev/ttys0 and so on. cant find any coms past 4.
this is testing my patients
i managed to changed the usb from com port 8 to com port 1, but still no joy!!
what am i doing wrong?
rob
What version of Megajolt Lite Jr Configurator software are you using? Mine is version 3.2.1
Does it look like this?
[Edited on 14/4/08 by RichardK]
not sure, i had it from paulf a while back, think it may be v3.
no looks nothing like that! looks far simpler and more old, yours looks quite cool with all the digits. so take it mine is an older version
You may want to try the latest version then, depending on the firmware you have on your megajolt that may need doing as well.
If it was me I would be getting the latest version of software, ensuring the com port in windows matches the megajolt(ie let windows sort itself out
the make mj match that instead of trying to force it the other way round) If it still won't communicate try doing the firmware as this
doesn't use that software it uses the firmware tool.
The megajolt is powered up isn't it! the isolator switch isn't off is it
Just thought I'd check!!! Hope you're not offended!!
Rich
never offended on here mate. ye think it is powered up, i got no isolator switch. just wired upto ignition. maybe i should try the new version.
just wish i could get it to comunicate.
I've got the version 3 software running on a approx 3 years old Megajolt (it was originally the old Java based tuning software)
You might need to re-start the computer before the USB adapter properly uses the COM1, if something was already using it the computer will prob need
re-starting.
Hi Rob
It is some time since i supplied the megajolt, so am assuming it may have early firmware and tuning software loaded .
You need to go to the megajolt site and find the instructions on upgrading firmware, and then download the latest firmware and configaration software
as it is much better than the old version and has more facilitys.
Check it out and get back to me if you have any questions about the firmware upgrade.
Paul
ok paul, is it easy to do? but if cant communicate with the megajolt how can i upload the firmware?
this is all confusing me now. feel like an old man who has never touched a pc!
i really appreciate the help guys.
rob
ok downloaded the new version looks alot more advanced. however i could not open the controller firmware. do i need this?
You will need to get the usb port set to talk to the megajolt first, it is possible as I had the same problem with one i was setting up for someone
else with the early software he worked in IT and still had problems but we did get it to work, other option is do you have access to a Pc with a
serial port on it? this would be the best option as USB converters did cause problems on early versions but once the firmware is updated then it will
solve that problem.
You need to make sure that nothing else is using the com port selected, ie no pda software or modem etc.

nothing is being used on com port 7 so i am using that. i have dowloaded the latest version but cant update the cntroller firmware. i have not got use
to an old laptop. but may have to buy one by the looks of it.
thanks
rob
If you get really stuck you could post it back to me and i will upgrade the firmware, but it may be better to persevere and sort out how to do it as
postage would be about £5 each way by special delivery.I could do it to return next day so will be 3 or 4 days to sort it.
Paul.
i think it is now comunicting with the magajolt as when i am on the new version and switch on the ignition a warning box appears saying that i have an unsupported controller version. i have downloaded it but cant get it to open as it does not recognise the program that created it. so i am gettin somewhere but then getting knocked back!
Rob
You can borrow my old laptop, with serial port, if you want to try it - I'll need it back pretty quickly though as I'm in the middle of
setting up my ECU and I haven't chanced a USB converter with my Emerald!
Wyn
Restart the pc after changing the comm port or it wont be active on that port, can you select comm 7 on the megajolt menu?

Try downloading config version 3.00 it is an older version and should work with the firmware in the unit.

Sounds like you're nearly there fella, what he says above use version 3 and get it working then when you can upgrade to the latest firmware and
then start using the latest software version to reconfigure, not exactly sure what's the difference between the firmwares anyway.
Keep going mate you get it sorted soon.
Rich
thanks wyn, its ok i will try and get this sorted out, wont let it beat me.
PAUL you are BLOODY legend!!!!
got it to communicate on v3.0.0.
ooooooo what a relief!!! is it too late to start the car up?? i think not!!!!
cheers guys for all your help especially paul.
thanks
rob
Nice
Thats good to hear , V3.0 will work fine but have a look on the web site to see the improvements with V3.2.1 and then let me know if you need any help
to upgrade the firmware. The maps you were having trouble opening should now open ok with V3.0
Paul
Ive just reda this thread. Sorry im a bit late. I too had big problems with MJLJ. Solved when Brent advised to upgrade my PC software as you have done. I also found brays terminal was very handy when checking out the com ports to make sure they were matched. Im sure i posted a link ages ago - need to do a search for it.
