zeroing clocks
iiyama - 21/4/08 at 11:47 AM

Got any reccomendations for getting the clock zeroed before I finish building? Be nice to have 0000 when I first start to drive and i get the feeling that the car is going to get a new reg anyway.

Cheers peeps!

It all depends what clocks they are!!!

I zeroed my old sierra clocks...fiddly job getting them all appart, but deffinately doable if you think asbout it....

And no, ataching a drill in reverse doesnt work

on some of the speedo's once the glass is removed you can just turn the rotary dials round with your finger or a pen, they just click.

No, but running the drill forward will and might be quicker dependng on how many miles the clock is showing already

There is a word for doing that sort of thing..It's called "clocking" !

i believe clocking is legal, its just illegal to sell a clocked car without telling the next owner.

i could be wrong but am fairly sure thats right.

Besides which the clock won't be in the same car it came from.

Mr Whippy - 21/4/08 at 12:52 PM

it's not clocking if the car is new

Ummm. So if I go down the scrappy and find a speedo with a lower mileometer reading technically that is not clocking? I understand the bit about informing the purchaser BTW

Correct. If it were illegal then clock manufacturers would have to find a way to make odometers completely fail safe and never breakdown. This is impossible so replacing clocks is OK as long as the mileages are recorded and subsequent owners are informed.

This does beg the question regarding people who build cars with 2nd hand parts of unknown mileages etc. Virtually impossible to say how many miles each of the parts has done unless are all reconditioned to as new condition. Running old cars and repairing them with scrap yard finds also makes a mockery of the law surrounding fraudulently clocking cars. Every moving bit of the car could be from a different vehicle of unknown mileage but as long as the clocks havent been tampered with its OK. Of course we know why its illegal in terms of increasing newer cars values etc.

thats just a risk you have to take buying a kit car and way they need to be looked over more carefully than a production car.

clocks are digital and off a Hayabusa.

I wasn't being that general and only really referring to the fact that a kit car is a bunch of second hand parts of sometimes various origins. The odometer might be meaningless anyway.

I'll get the air gun out and try it on my digital clocks then.
