Connecting to MegaJolt for the first time - argh
Paul TigerB6 - 24/4/08 at 07:42 PM

Hi all.

Having real problems trying to hook my laptop up to the Megajolt. I've had a look at previous threads and just seem to keep hitting a wall with a popup saying "Could not read calibration data from controller, a communications timeout occured" every time i click [tools] then [load axis calibration]

So what am i doing wrong?? Under device manager and then Ports where the USB adaptor driver is identified i have COM8 so set the MJ software to the same in [tools], [configurator options]

AAAAAArrrrrrrggggggghhhhhh!!
Paul

Post a question on the Autosport Labs forum - the author (Brent Picasso) is keen to sort out USB serial converters.

Have you rebooted the laptop since setting the com port in device manager? I had a similiar problem once with one someone was trying to set up and it was fine after we had set the port then rebooted, does it connect at all or is it just not able to read the calibration data?

Paul.

Which version of the tuning software are you using?

For me, only v3.2.1 would work with my usb to serial converter, but I had to upgrade the MJ firmware to use it.

Once that was done it connected easily.

After trying to get old version software to work and pulling hair out, Brent advised my to try the new version. It worked brilliantly with USB lead. The thread will be on here and autosports labs as i documented the fix.

I also used brays terminal to set the comms up between the laptop and MJLJ. My conclusion was that my issue was 2 fold. Firstly the old software preferred serial connection and used Java which seemed unreliable. Secondly on my laptop i use mobile phone backing up software. At teh time i had sony software on there that i didnt use anymore. I think this blocked the comm ports (something to do with the way it scanenges between all available ports looking for something to be connected so it can synchronise - which can block the port to other devices). I un-installed such software. Proved comms on Brays then reinstalled the phone software after talking to the MJLJ and downloading several maps to test it out. Been OK since.

Hmmm now thats interesting!! I have a Sony Erricson mobile and have all the software on my laptop!! Battery died on the lappy last night so not tried it again this morning but if it doesnt work i'll uninstall all the Sony software........

Watch this space then - thanks for the tip Darren. I'd have never thought of that myself

DarrenW you are a genius....... i want to have your babies.....no hang on you can have my babies...............

As mentioned, it was the Sony mobile phone software that was causing the problem. Removed every last programme that was on there and rebooted - result was an instant reading as soon as i turned the ignition on.

So, i have now downloaded the Pinto map into the MegaJolt. Tried to start it and nothing............ its run out of petrol!!!! Oh well i dont care - i'm going to have lunch a happy bunny.

Paul - it is / will be my utmost pleasure

The moto of locostbuilders should be that its good to give and recieve

Im genuinely chuffed to be of service. I would never have guessed the software was at fault but it made a difference to me. Its a bugger that you ran out of fuel but thats the easy fix.

I hope you enjoyed your lunch.
