Its ok, would have liked a few more lights, especially nearer the empty side. Must be just old fashioned but I've always preferred dials as I can look out the windscreen but still read them in the corner of my eye, where as with a digital gauge requires the need to focus on it. give what whippy said about a fe more light (it makes a LOT of sense) i might be tempted to work out/have made, a guage which is just one of those
tri-colour LEDs. green yellow and red then maybe flashing when it gets really low (and/or maybe a reserve tank lol) it would be even less practical
though... my car's not really for long distance though...
as for monochrome in peripheral vision, are you sure? mine isn't... (though the colour does go a little bit off on the outsides)
Colours wouldn't help me as I'm totally monochrome but a few more lights would be good. In fact, I'd like a little picture of the tank and have the LEDs depict where the fuel level was........er, is. And the same for the coolant temp, oil pressure, oil temp, fuel pressure etc.....
This poses interesting philosophical questions about what information one needs from a fuel gauge.
For instance, how about
A. I don't need any fuel, I've got lots
B. I need to start thinking about it, but not yet
C. Better start actively looking, but could maybe afford to miss an opportunity if it is awkward to get to or very expensive
D. Go straight to the nearest fuel station
That would seem to do it for me, so I reckon 4 lights would be enough

How about "I've got half a tank so I can make this trip without having to fill up first".
That circuit could do with some filtering to stop the LED's flickering as fuel sloshes around.
