OMP steering wheel, horn push
James - 16/7/08 at 03:21 PM

Has anyone used the horn push on the OMP Targa (I think) steering wheel?

http://www.ompracing.it/detail.html?productcode=TARGA

I can't see how to possibly use the Sierra slip ring mechanism with this.

I'd much rather use the supplied horn push than have an extra button for the horn.

I spose an alternative way is to have a telephone cable style coiled wire to the button on the wheel... but with a 4.1 turn lock to lock rack that might be a problem!

Cheers,
James

looks like they have used a coiled wire themselves

The pic on the right, not the Le Mans car on the left!

Yeah but even with their infinite budget they STILL have a coiled wire…

Now you see, if they'd used a Sierra column like me, they'd have probably won Le Mans!

Simple mistakes!

So, if I *have* to use a coiled wire, what've people used? I'm assuming a keyboard (5v) or phone wire (5v?) won't be up to taking the current. What about an cigarette lighter phone charger wire?
Would still prefer not to have to use it if possible!

James

Hi mate
I have the very same steering wheel & have the very same problem. I have checked there web site & they said to use the steering wheel parts but I haven't a clue how this will work.
I have tried running the wiring through the centre part & on lock it snags & cuts the outer sheef within a couple of turns.
Coiled cable is probably ok for a rally car etc but not for what we are doing.
Help needed please

I've managed to dig out the original steering wheel, thinking maybe one could somehow attach the slip ring to the back of the OMP boss....

but now, I can't get the OMP boss off the steering column to check!

And to compound it all, one of the steering wheel to boss socket caps has round out!!! Gah!!!!

Cheers,
James

I have emailed the company & hope to hear from them as to a solution. It may not have been an expesive item but if I had known this was going to be a problem I would have sourced a better looking ford steering wheel for beer tokens

my boss kit came with the slip rings that just clip on to the horn push.

It is held to the boss with two csk screws

Well, bit of progress.

Had a bit of a brain wave and pulled the Sierra steering wheel apart... the slip ring actually just unclips from the back of the Sierra wheel.

Fortunately... it also clips straight into the back of the OMP boss!

Sadly it's not quite that simple in that the Sierra contacts that go on the slip ring don't reach it.... but that can't be that hard to fix! So nearly there!

I nice, neat simple fix coming up hopefully!

finger crossed...

James

Okay.... well I didn't think just spacing the switch forwards would work as it's tapered.

After briefly considering whether there's by any chance of a 5mm longer switch I've decided to go for the cheaper option and araldited the switch in place... but about 3mm further forward.
Hopefully it'll be ok as I appreciate that if it drops out then it could jam the steering!

But seems like the best option so far. Well pleased.

Hope that helps Fub,

Cheers,
James

Slip ring switch seems pretty solid in the column with araldite so gonna leave it now.

Hopefully won't fall out and lock the steering on the motorway some time!

James
