Won't Start

Any idea's, i took out the Sierra loom and marked it up, took out all the wires i did not need.
The engine turns over but wont start, i have no spark and have tried 2 coils still no good any ideas.

ignition module? hall sensor in the dizzy?

if the coil's getting no trigger, it won't spark.

Are you getting power to the coil? Are you still getting power to the coil when cranking?

Power to the coil and the module, coil not getting hot.

Time to go back to basics.

Is it a 1.6 SOHC pinto? Is engine and loom out of same donor? Was it running before you took donor to bits? Would be useful to know if you have dismantled or replaced anything.

Firstly check the static timing is correct. Very easy to get the dizzy 180deg out. Does the car backfire and pop but not start - often a sign that you are 180 out. Also check leads are in the right order, dont ask me how but i managed to do this early on in the build.

What ignition set up are you using? Early 1.6 sierra will probs be the basic electronic set up that is what most people with basic cars use (has ignition amplifier (7 wires iirc) but no ECU). The OE set up is quite robust. Ive had a new aftermarket amplifier fail but old 2nd hand motorcraft one solved it.

Assuming module is wired correctly are you getting a spark at the plugs?

If the answers to all these are yes then there cant be much wrong with ignition.

After that are you getting fuel in? What carb set up are you using? Pump?

If a yes to fuel then it should start. Ive had one fire up with timing quite a way out. Timing light with advance setting is very useful and makes timing tweak at tickover very easy to do - but engine does have to fire up first to use one.

I had same problem with my old pinto set up after i re routed the wires in an attempt to tidy up, att he time i wished i had never touched it

Turned out to be a bad earth to the ign module and coil,once cleaned up it was fine.

Also if you are managing to turn the engine over pull the spark plugs out to let it spin a bit faster and get the fuel up there, i found if i left the car for any length of time it would take a lot of cranking the old mechanical pinto pump to prime.

Hmmm dont you mean 360 degrees out. Its a 4 stroke engine.
You mean the piston is at TDC, and it sparks, but its on the wrong stroke.
Its two revolutions of the crank per Firing of the cylinder. (Remember It's - Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow)
Easy way to check. Whip off the rocker box, and check BOTH valves are closed, and the piston is at TDC when the spark should occur.

No Spark at all... Sounds very electrical.

Check you have all the connections correct, and that its actually wired correctly.
Check wire by wire that it comes from the right place and goes to the right place.
Check the power is connected, and that the earth is good.

Its probably something simple. No sparks at all, smacks of:
No power
No earth
Incorrectly wired
Faulty units (Amp unit ot the Dizzy unit).
If you can substitue the units with known working ones, or test yours on someone elses car, you can eliminate the units etc.
