I have an 05 R1 engine that I have just got to the stage of trying to start. It wont at the moment.

I have followed the varoius wiring guides and previous posts on here, i.e. sorted out all the switches like sidestand/lean angle etc. I have used the original R1 loom for the engine, not using the clocks, but a dd2 digidash.

When i switch on the main ignition switch the fuel pump primes and I can hear fuel being pumped.

When i press the start switch the starter engages and the engine turns over, but its not starting.

Any ideas?

Cooling system is full and there is oil in the engine.

New plugs as they foul up pretty easy.

Do you have a spark at the plugs? first thing to check when an engine doesn't start.

mine was a bitch to start at the same bit, try taking off the fuel line at the engine (careful if its pressurised) and check that fuel is actually coming out of the pipe.
then you can take the plugs out to check for a spark when you turn her over.
also try a bit of easy start, it got mine going in the end.

I had a simular problem, turned out to be a loose connection in one of the grey connectors that fed the spark plugs, worth checking all the connector blocks and making sure all the wires are seated properly into the connector blocks.

Thanks guys, I dont think its to do with switches or immobiliser as the starter relay is engaging and the starter is turning the engine.

I am sure fuel is getting to the throttle bodies.

Next I will check for spark at the plugs and see if there is any loose connections at the grey connector blocks. I had previously checked the spark plugs condition and cleaned up the usual stuff on the ends.

If you're getting sparks then I'd agree with trying changing the spark plugs. Mine (06 R1) wouldn't start until I put a new set of plugs in.

I have investigated a bit more and have found that there is no spark at the plugs:

-wiring connectors all seem to be intact.

-I have previously joined the usual switches, i.e. clutch / stand etc. and fixed the tip-over sensor in the 'up' position.

-I cant see any connectors for an immobiliser so I guess one was not fitted to the bike.

-Checked the earth wires on the ecu connector and they are good

-checked the resistances of the coils / crankshaft sensor/ nuetral sensor and these are within specs.

Have tested for sparking with a new plug.

Any more ideas, gents?

Just had a look at the battery voltage while cranking - drops from near 13V to 5 - 6V while cranking. Suspect this may have something to do with it, although the battery is brand new and fully charged.
