Pulling my hair out - Telemetrix speedo sender wiring???

I went for SVA retest today and failed because I just can't get my speedo to work. I was hoping it was a bad sender but I replaced that and when we got to the centre, nothing, not a flicker of the needle.

I have this sender with 4 magnets.

http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p1355/SPEEDO-SENSOR-6MM-(PERCEPTION)/product_info.html

It's the newer type digital speedo where you just enter your calibration number from the display rather than the dip switches.

I've wired it up as per the instructions on Merlin. One wire to 12V, one wire to speedo, 1-2mm gap to magnets. We've ran it up to 4th gear and the needle doesn't budge.

Now I've seen an old thread which looks like it has a similar sender with one wire to gauge, one wire to ground and the 12V pull up connected to 12V. What is the 12V pull up?

Anybody else have this gauge and how did you wire it up?

This is all I need to get working to get my SVA ticket but I'm struggling with it.

On a slightly related note my Telemetrix tacho is reading about 2 thirds rpm. It's probably just the dip switch settings but I'm pretty sure it's set for 4cyl so it doesn't make sense at how far it's out.

Any clues appreciated as I'm hoping I can nip down on Thursday if I can get it working.

I have a similar setup on my Revotec speedo. Looking at the installation instructions of mine it shows there are two wires that can be connected to the signal input, one for a magnetic sensor (like mine and yours) and one for a hall/ecu sensor. Is there any chance that this is the same as yours and you have connected to the wrong wire?

I've tried both and nothing.
There was a post from Indykid a couple of years ago that said he connected the magnetic sender to gauge and earth and connected the gauge 12V pull up. I've PM'd him so hopefully I can get a reply.
In the meantime... if anyone else has the same gauge....

Have you also checked that the sender is still working? If you nip them up to tightly (which isn't very tight) they can break, as I once found out.

Connect both wires to a multimeter and pass a magnet over it.

Some people have had to buy this one

http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p1354/LED-INDUCTIVE-SEN SOR-%28M8%29/product_info.html

To get the telemetrix to work properly.

I had a nightmare with mine, but that was down to the wrong switches 1-10 instead of 10-1.

i checked with a multimeter and the resistance zeros out when the magnet passes.

As i said, in the end it was me making a mistake. So just check everything once more very carefully.

If the needle doesnt move at all, theres definately something wrong.

My 2 wire sensor was earth and sensor. no 12v
My 3 wire sensor was 12v, earth and sensor.

As Ben said - I only got mine working with an inductive three wire sensor (search Europa spares for an EMP34-1). 12v and ground and a feed to the gauge (the white/brown or white/grey wire on the telemetrics IIRC)

Cheers, Neil.

I've got a 3 wire in the garage. I just need an M8 fine to tighten it down. I've also just ordered a 2 wire sensor so one way or another I'll get this thing working.

I'm starting to wonder if the wiring instructions are wrong as I thought myself that it would be gauge and earth and actually ran the wires like that originally till I read the website and saw 12v and gauge.

Best play it safe for next time, get a super cheap pushbike digital speedo for £10 that you can backlight and keep as a backup on the day.

The speedo sensor can easily be tested for quality of signal, without the aid of special meters by connecting one wire to a positive supply and the other wire to a 12v bulb, which has an earth/ground connection. The bulb should illuminate if the sensor is working properly.

Just to update.

The two wire sensor doesn't work in any way, shape or form although it tests ok with a bulb. I spoke to Green Gauges who said that they don't supply that type any more (despite the website only having instructions for that type). They said anyone selling it is using old stock.

I tried the three wire one I had and finally got a good signal off the six drive shaft bolts. It's smooth and should be fine now so hopefully I can now get the retest out the way.

So, if anyone else has this gauge use the three wire sensor off the bolts rather than two wire and magnets.
