OT - charging a slave battery

L&G,
Neighbour has a 2 ton tipping trailer. Tipping mechanism is 12V battery -> hydraulic pump -> hydraulic ram (all on the trailer). From a fully charged battery he gets about 6, 7 or 8 tips; he needs to get more...

Possible options:
1. Fit a second battery
2. Fit 12S (whatever the second plug/skt setup is called); install 12V/240V inverter and charger to generate 14V and top up slave battery while travelling.
3. Some system to trickle charge slave directly from truck alternator, bearing in mind the relatively low current capacity of existing wiring and the possibility/likelihood of the slave being fairly flat. Was thinking along the lines of diode + current-limiting resistor.

Seems to me:
1. Kluge
2. Sledgehammer
3. Potentially most elegant/locost solution.

Any ideas out in LCB land?
Cheers,
John.

Split charge relay as used in most caravan installations.

Try here
half way down the page.

And now dead easy to use as they don't need to sense that the engine is running like the old ones (I think they sense the battery voltage of your main battery and only charge the second one when the main one is fully charged.)

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

A few ways to do it but a modern "inteligent" split charge relay the best --- works on the tow car battery reaching a reasonable charging voltage before the slave battery gets charged. This is an improvement over traditional split charge relays.

Can probably be found on Ebay a good bit cheaper .

For a socket connection to the trailer a standard carvan auxilary plug socket called the 12S (aka Grey Socket) is the puka way to do it.

This kit has everything required except the plug for the trailer

Thank you, Gents; plenty to look though there!
John.
