My alternator is officially forked - ideas
Weel, iv had the work that my alternator is officially screwed so im on the lookout for another one with v pulley but i was wondering if anyone could
post some pics of a home made bracket so i can get some ideas.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

You dont really need to find one with a `V' pulley - I have just fitted an Mx6 alternator onto my Alfa 164 , I just swapped the pulley's
over (although I did need to machine a small spacer to get the V in the right place , and make a small adapter bracket....)
Its cuz I is blond , innit

another one the same that works? 
i guess anything can be made to fit, with a little/lot of effort. not sure how much other peoples set ups will help you, since your engine isn't
very common on here.
but, pulleys can be made up by a few people on here, pulleys might be able to be swapped over, you might find a different alternator that fits your
brackets. you might have to make/get a bracket made up.
whats wrong with the alternator?

Not sure. My mum just passed on a message to say the place i took it to be repaired, cant repair it 
Problem is, alternators for an early (83 - 87) xjs seem to be incredibly hard to come by and when they do, they are seriously expensive. Another
option it seems is to fit a ford orion/escort/fiesta alternator which are the same as the Jag V12 so might fit without too much work but are still 30
- 40 quid.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

30-40 isn't much really. when i was having problems with mine (which turned out not to be a problem at all lol) the cheapest i could find were
about £70-80
i'd just get a new straight replacement.
escort/fiesta seems a decent idea to me, and as claire says, if they don't have multi V pulleys, the one on your alternator should be a straight
swap id think (did ford own jag back then?)

Theres no such thing as it cant be repaired. Depending on what it is my mums prabably got the bits to repair it. I used to rebuild them when I was a
nipper. my dad gave me 4 quid for every recondioned unit and back in 82 that was good money for a 7 year old!
Its probably one of 5 things faulty:
Stator
Rotor
brushes
rectifier
regulator (if it has one built in)

^^^ what he said, well almost. it'll have to ahve been driven over by a 'dozer to be unfixable.
do you know what the fault is? ebay linky shows it to be nothing special, like a mondeao or summit.
you can fit an old lucas or any other alternator to your engine provding you can supply 12 V to excite it and drive the pulley.
easy as falling off a tree on a windy day.
obviously for the latter you need to match the pulley and have a bracket to hold it in place, both of which are doable, either by your own hand or by
peeps on here.
I fitted non-standard pulley to tiny nippon densor and made my own bracket. it worked well until I cooked the engine.

When I get back on to my car and start with electrics it'l probably get a brand new lucas LRA1 just need to build it from all the parts. I even
have new ally body brackets!

Apparently, all the screws broke when the guy tried to take it apart (dad takes better messages than mum  )

I brought another alternator on fleabay the other day for £15 out of a mk2 fiesta xr2, fitted it yesterday and it was a perfect fit
