Firing up a Crossflow

I've not yet started wiring my car but want to fire up my recon crossflow engine to check all is OK before going much further with build.

Can anyone advise minimum wiring required to start and run a crossflow.

Thanks,

David

Good question. Suppose depends on whether you have coolant and fan belt on...

Coil, distributor, engine earth strap. Starter Motor (takes a lot of current use something thick preferably using the solenoid!)

Good idea to wire up the engine oil pressure lamp. Disconnect the coil HT lead and turn engine over until it goes out.. Then reconnect and fire it up!

Cheers

One important thing to remember when firing up an xflo is the firing order is odd ball Ford 1,2,4,3 with anticlockwise rotation on the dizzie not 1,3,4,2 as on most 4 cylinders.

Ideally also you need a ballast ressitor in the coil circuit if you use a Ford coil and intend runing for more than a couple of minutes.

Good point BT (unless you like exploding coils!). I used a later Bosch electronic distributor which is highly advisable no more points crap....

Oh and make sure the distributor is not 180 degrees out if it's been removed and put back again...

Cheers

Thanks fellas.

Not being hot on electrics can anyone sketch a suggested circuit diagram? What's a ballast resistor and now you mention it, has anyone got a picture showing distributor orientation as I've read several descriptions which seem to contradict each other. Should have took a photo before I stripped the donor, but that's hindsight for you.

does it have a 6 wire ign module? these are the simplest i've come across, well easy to wire.

Don't know. Where would I find that?

Let's not confuse matters...

David: Standard X-Flow dizzy from the ark doesn't have ignition module just standard points inside. Wire up as normal. I was saying electronic ignition is good because it means no adjusting/breaking down/misfire and no points bounce at high RPM.

For info check this link...
http://www.locustenthusiastsclub.fsnet.co.uk/tech/elec_ign/ electronic%20ignition..htm

The ballast resistor is actually and length of pink 'rubbery' wire if you've stripped the donor loom. It is resistance wire so don't cut it down.

JoelP the electronics ignition I used was three wire... Module on side of Dizzy. From a valencia lump in a Fiesta.

Cheers
