water temp sensor question

Hi, I have a pinto engine in my car.
Can i use the temp sender mounted in the engine block to see what the water temp is.
I am using a standard smiths type gauge.
Tried to wire it up but does not seem to show the corect temp.
Could somebody give some ideas so i can check the wiring,

By the way just used my chrimbo present a dremmel to cut sausage filter hole it bonnet, just the job ,well done santa !!!

All temp sensors have different characteristic resistance/temperature relationship. You need a compatible gauge and temp sensor.
