not quite locost- comercial alternator wiring

i have been working on the electrics of a renault coach
it has a lucas alternator, with a large pos, alarge neg cable, and a smaller single wire connector
i assume that as in small car alternators, that the small wire goes to positive via a bulb ?

if i do this, the bulb lights but does not go out, yet the alternator is charging
thoughts ?

from memory, the ind light is usually wired to one part of the rectifier diode pack,if that part packs up the light will stay on but it will charge.
is the bulb the right wattage/voltage?

How do you know that it is actually charging?

I follow your logic with the wiring and I can't think it would be any different just because it's bigger.

Does the light stay on even the engine is revved?

Are we talking a Renault model that was a re-badged Dodge 50 series made after Renault bought out Chrysler UK truck brands.

quite possibly bt
its according to the neighbour, a 12 ton dodge commando chassis, with a waddhom stringer vanguard coach body

i think it is charging, as the volts rise when the engine is running

long and the short of the story, the wiring had had a hard life, i have got involved rewiring the lighting, and between the pair of us, it no longer charges

The Dodge 100 if it a Perkins engine is going to be a standard Lucas or Lucas-CAV alternator then it shouldn't be anything fancy --- it isn't unknown for a fault to develop in which the light stays on but still charges cure get the alternator rebuilt.

Very last versions used Renault engines I have no idea who supplied the engine electrics on those.

think it is a perky
if you rev the engine from cold, without a lamp connected, it seems to self exciteafter about 30 secs.... not quite sure if this will prove reliable, but the neighbour is happy with it....
see how long it lasts!!
