problem fuel gauge
My fuel tank is virtually empty but I have just tried to wire up the smiths fuel guage and the needle has just rapidly climbed up to well beyond
"full" and sat there until i turned the ignition off.
After that it slowly crept back down to empty.
my sender is wired to the gauge properly and the fuel tank is earthed.
Any clues?

possible wrong ohm reading, fuel sender for the gauge.
or did you check there where the same ohm readings?

okay the sender is 250ohms empty - 15ohms full and the manual states that this is designed to work with smiths gauges.
does this sound right?

Have you accidentally connected the guage wire to the earth terminal on the tank unit?

ah that might be the problem, then did you get any resistors with you fuel gauge?
can you get to the fuel sender?

hi adrian, there is actually only 1 terminal on the sender in the tank. I have just earthed the sender by connecting one of the sender fitting bolts
to the chassis

ah ive found it - the guage is 10-180 ohms resistance but it doesnt say which way round that is empty/full!

the smiths gauge as fitted to the mini originally had a voltage regulator fitted which all the gauges bar the ammeter where wired through. This was a
rectangular box which has to be fitted a certain way up

thanks austin man, the signal appears to be clean when it reaches the gauge so i dont think thats it.
does anyone know if the smiths gauges described as "10-180 ohms" would work in the same direction as a sender that goes from "250
full to 15ohms empty"?
im going to try to put 5 litres in it tomorrow and see if it goes down.
where can i go from there?

the problem you have sounds to me like the guage is wired wrong, just fitted my after market guage and on the guage you should have
ignition supply
earth
sensor wire from sender
lighting wire (come on with sidelights)
wiring on sender
body of sender to be earthed
output wire to guage
(if there is a short between these it will read full)
my advise to a continuity check between the sensor wire and earth
voltage reg issue is normally fluctuating reading when engine is running but can also be getting full reading as i think from memory the voltage regs
as fitted to old mini's smith guages knocks the voltage down to 5V if you run a guage that needs a regulated supply you can damage it so be
carefull

just searched your guage and
TFC1-1552-00
Fuel Level, 10-180 OHM, 12VDC
looks like it should not need the regulator
edited to add
earth the sender not the tank you will have a rubber seal between the sender plate and tank which means no earth

On my VDO sender unit I first put the float and lever in the wrong way around ie from the wrong side thus giving the opposite reading if you had to
asemble this yourself on yours this is a possible cause.

Hi, I know this thread is a few years old now but did you get to the bottom of your issue with the fuel sender as I seem to be in exactly the same
position.
I have a Ford sender which is 200 ohms empty and 8 ohms full and the Smiths telemetrix sender is meant to be the other way around?

These guys - https://www.spiyda.com/magento/index.php/vehicle-electronics/fuel-gauge-electronics/fuel-gauge-wizard-mk2.html will sell you a thingy
which, they claim, will sort out mismatched gauges.
I haven't tried it yet as, although my gauge reads in reverse I know what it means
I'm addicted to brake fluid, but I can stop anytime.
