Audi airbag light - Help/advise/suggestions/links needed!

Hi All,

My audi a4 avant (2003) 1.9 tdi has thrown up the airbag light constantly.

I had this a month ago and took it to a local garage who for free said they would turn the light off. I am aware of the safety issues here is there is an underlying problem, but the light went out and behaved as normal.

Then on friday evening i stopped at the station to pick up the Mrs. Sitting the car with the ignition off, the restart and the airbag lamp comes on (as per normal on start up) but doesn't go out after a few seconds.

Anyone able to shed any light on this? I wiggled the seat wires before i got the light reset last time. However its odd the light came on whilst stationary.

I really need to car scanning and the ability to reset the light. anyone know if the free vagcom software that works with the ebay cables can do this?

I am based in Purley (surrey) and also work in Horsham West Sussex if any kind sole can help out at all?

Audi

Did your wife move the car seat beofre the light came on?

Do a quick google search it's more than likely the connectors under the seats (a common problem on Audi's)

last time it came on we had shared the driving and yes the seat was moved for a 6 foot 4 guy to a 5 foot 3 girl!

But this time i was sitting in the car the whole time on my own! engine off for a coupel of mins, then back on and the light stays on?

I have this on my 2008 Mondeo as well as my old Rover 75, the Rover was sorted by disconnecting the battery for 15 mins, and cutting the plug off the wires under both seats and joining them securely,
The light NEVER came on again while driving, but did on start up, (check light)

So i will be doing the mondeo soon, however it is not an mot failure

regards

Steve

I tookt he battery off for 2.5 hours but it has not fixed the isse (although I didnt wiggle the wires before doing so to "fix" the fault.

I think the audi computer stores the fault even if its fixed and has to be cleared by a machine/vagcom

the cables off ebay with the free software are pretty good for the price! What I found was that the free version doesn't show all the descriptions for the fault codes - it just says "buy the full version for all the codes". Quick google of the code number, which it does give, normally gets the description quickly. It does let you reset all the codes tho, regardless of whether it shows the description or not.

They're also handy if you've got odd engine problems - from a look at the fault codes on my Passat, I found that one of the vacuum pipes that controls the turbo was leaking, and saved me a fortune on a fix...

Important Safety Precautions.

The SRS system is in effect a small armed bomb.

(1) Switch off ignition and disconnect the battery for 15minutes before doing any work on the SRS system.

(2) Remove the ignition key & fob and keep it in place well away from the vehicle.

Only then is it safe to work on the the connections for the SRS system.

9 times out 10 it is the connectors under one or both of the seats.

I have cleared the airbag light and done an error code check with one of the cheapo ebay cables,
they are ok.
My light is now still on though as the computer wont talk to the ecu anymore.
Apparantely there is a common earth fault with the airbag ecu which I need to look at. A4 1998 so might be different to yours

FYI...my 2000 A4 tdi estate had exactly the same problem.....Took it to audi who told me a new ignitor was required and it would cost £500 plus....Booked car in as I felt I had no option...However the day before a colleague mentioned that the connectors sometimes need a wiggle (As mentioned)...Guess what a wiggle and a reset, and it was fine (the reset was done by someone with the VAG software).

Since then I have never ever gone back to an Audi garage! (I still like them and now run an A6).
