The body of the starter motor carries the return current through the engine block to the chassis earth (via an earth strap). This means that you only have to worry about the live side!

My X-flow is wired as follows (note: this is for an original inertia starter motor with separate solenoid)

Thick cable from battery +ve to one of the big terminals of the starter solenoid.

Thick cable from the other big terminal down to the lug on the starter.

Thin-ish cable from the Lucas connector on the solenoid to the starter switch.

Press the button, current on the thin wire operates the solenoid (it's only a big relay), which then connects the two thick wires together. Starter motor spins (hopefully!)

Hope this helps...

David

cheers, sounds pretty straight forward.

I have also got the original inertia starter motor, but seem to be missing the separate solenoid, is this solenoid a peticular one for the starter motor, or can i just use any ford item?

It's a very common item, which you should be able to get from any half-decent motor factors.

Looking down on the top, it's about 50mm square with 2 large bolt-up connectors, and one or two lucas connectors. Under the square top is a cylinder around 50mm long. It has a bracket on one side to bolt to the chassis.

If the motor factors haven't got one, try the usual mail-order suspects (e.g. Burtons).

rgds,

David

I think so!

Just ask for a Mk1/Mk2 Escort starter solenoid.

Lars,
I've got an old spare one you can have.
(I also found that star washer that dropped on the floor if you want it.)
