OBD2 Dashboard

Hi,
Is anybody using a OBD2 Dashboard in there car?. I'm looking at maybe using a 7" tablet of some sort with GPS.

This has come up a couple of times. It seems that for most engine functions it would work quite well, but using GPS for a speedo wouldn't be very IVA friendly.

You'd also have to find a very reliable bluetooth obd2 adapter, my 'fake' one lasts about half an hour before it needs resetting by unplugging it and putting it back in. That wouldn't bode well for a permanent solution.

The Torque application is quite good though, nearly had a few bumps by concentrating on the output of it rather than on the road!

Although there is a lot of data available via OBBD II not a lot of it is much use on an instrument panel as it will update too slowly.

Speed --- very accurate if tyre sizes are unchanged but a bit slow
RPM --- much too slow
Water temperature ---- OK
Oil temperature (if available) ---- OK
Battery Voltage OK
HEGO output -- OK

Oiil Pressure ( not often available) --- Ok
Throttle opening --- OK but slow
Engine Load --- OK but Slow
Manifold Vacuum OK but slow

I am not sure it would tell you any thing usefull......the military discovered that once you get to. somewhere like 5 sensor bits of information you don't notice any others. one of those inputs is concentrating on the road! A tablet like display would be a liability in a car if it were to be used for engine data as you drive.

Personally I need RPM, speed, engine temp and fuel in that order and nothing else.

IMHO all are best done with analogue dials well positioned around the steering column.

Engine temp should also IMHO have a big red warning lamp in the line of sight.

Anything else is a distraction to driving the car.
