Rear fog light for IVA

Morning all,

Reading through other post (eg http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=183457) I'm not quite sure of the regs.

rdodger says that as long as the rear fog only comes on with main and dipped then none of the special latching (or buzzers) are required?

Is that down to how each tester reads the manual or does the manual make it clear?

Thanks,
C

That's what was checked at mine. As long as it couldn't be turned on with the sidelights and had the 'tell-tale' visual indicator on the dash/switch he was happy.

I have read the manual a few time and I have decided to fit the buzzer, i have sorted out a little circuit and the components will cost a fiver off ebay.

I think the wording is very much open to interpretation and for a fiver its worth doing.

Bit of a PITA though as I have finished my dash install and it will need to be opened up again.

Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016

It depends on if you read that the new notes (3&4) only apply when the front fogs are allowing the rears to be lit, OR notes 3 and 4 apply to rear fogs full stop.

4.
The rear fog lamp(s) must only illuminate when dipped beam, main beam or front fog lamps are lit (See Notes 3 & 4)

Note 3: front fog lamps may be illuminated with the side lamps only.

Note 4: Either of the following applies:
1) The rear fog lamp(s) may continue to operate until the position lamps are switched off, and the rear fog lamp(s) must then remain off until deliberately switched on again or,
2) An audible warning, additional to the mandatory tell-tale light, must be activated if the ignition is switched off or the ignition key is withdrawn and the driver's door is opened, whether the lamps in (RS4) are on or off, whilst the rear fog lamp switch is in the "on" position.

I queried this with the tester

It can now come on with side lights but must then turn off with the lights or have a buzzer.

If it comes on with dipped beam nothing has changed.

"1) The rear fog lamp(s) may continue to operate until the position lamps are switched off, and the rear fog lamp(s) must then remain off until deliberately switched on again"

It does specifically say see notes 3 & 4, so my initial reaction I would say applies to all vehicles with rear fog coming on with dip/main beam

If that is the case then any ordinary (traditional) setup does not comply with this, as, when you next turn the lights on if you've not turned the foglamp off it would automatically come back on with the lights whether you actually wanted it on or not, hence I would say the buzzer/warning was a requirement - I take it this is in a recent update of the manual, don't ever recall coming across it b4???

I've just re-read it for about the 5th time & it is very ambiguous as it could be read such that note 4 applies only if note 3 is applied first - as Loggyboy has said

I'll bet you'll get some testers insisting on it & some saying it's ok, I would get clarification from Vosa if I were going for a test, the guys at Vosa are really helpful & will email you their opinions as long as it's not about something very contentious, so would be worth going to test armed with an email from them!

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1
