Alternator wiring ford puma....

Mental block.....where do the two wires go on the alternator, not the main wires, but the small ones with the plug.

Thanks...Paul.

I thought all I had to do was look at my folder and the answer would be apparent. No it is not obvious. I have looked at the ECU and it is not any fancy charge control so it must be just the (NOT) charging light. In my case the charging light comes directly from the battery fuse box C3(3). The alternator aux pins go directly to the battery fuse box. I have a copy of the ford TIS CD somewhere and if you need further information I can have a dig.

I figure one lead to switched 12v, and the other to a warning light on the dash....no idea which way around the wires are meant to go from the socket on ...if there is anyway you can figure out which wire goes to 12v, then I'm sorted.....cheers.

I was just about to post the same info, it appears there is some sort of charge control from the ECU, not sure what you do with it when you don't have the stock ecu. There is also slight variations depending on year but don't appear that significant to me. I guess if you leave off the charge control it will either charge too much or not at all!

From: http://www.autoparts.uk.com/blog/?p=2534
....... remember that the alternator is still an alternator, if it’s not connected to the ECU it’ll revert back to the old school workings. If you disconnect the 3 pin PCM plug from the alternator and it is charging again, this will show the alternator is being controlled by the PCM. This will check if the alternator is still functioning

Here is an interesting thread:http://vehicle-electrics.co.uk/ford%20smart%20charge%20alternator.php

Alos I have connected a standard bulb thru 12V to my alternator charging wire and it works fine. The ecu connection as per diagram.

Many thanks for the info....although the diagram is not that clear, it seems one of the wire for the two pin is to drive a charge error light, so I'll take a flyer on which is which and report back....my digital dash has a spare warning light that is activated when its sees a 0v signal, I will give this a try.

Paul.
