Knock sensor rewiring

Looks like the Duratec engine in my Mondeo has a poorly knock sensor. The engine knocking doesn't change when I unplug it. The worrying thing is that just behind the connector (on the engine loom side) I found an awful lot of insulation tape, which suggests someone has already had a go at it. So I want to replace a section of wiring.

The wire to the knock sensor looks to be wrapped in foil, which I guess means it's shielded. I want to cut this wiring out about six inches back from the damaged end, and replace it with a length of equivalent wire to a new knock sensor.

Any advice on the best way to do this, and the best type of wire to use? How do I attach it to the existing loom, perhaps get a brand new connector and use that? Or solder?

Use something like this 2 Core Screened Shielded Sensor Wire Ideal for Crank Cam Speed Sensors sold perM.

Solder into the existing loom, using glue lined heatshrink on the joins. If you can, get a new plug and new crimp connectors for the sensor end to ensure a good connection, else trim down and solder the existing plug in place.
There may be enough part numbers on the plug to id the connector type for replacement, it may be AMP, TYCO, DEUTSCH amongst others, ford wil probably only offer a complete loom!
