Rev counter

Hi all.

I've been on the road for a few months but I have a problem I can't fathom.
The rev counter is fine up to about 3k, but after that starts bouncing between 1500 and 4500 revs even at steady motorway type speeds. The Ignition is standard points and condenser and the car runs smoothly. Any ideas??

Got to be a conection problem I think -- if it isn't in the wiring to the tacho check the main alternator connectors aren't arcing I had this once on a Rover 820 sent the tacho and speedo crazy at certain rpms.

I thought of this, but feel I'm missing something obvious. The wiring is in bits now so I'll have a look in the morning, Thanks
