Vauxhall Vectra
I currently have an 02 plate Vectra, not the most exciting car i know!
Anyway, i am having a problem with the dash electrics. Every morning it seems to cut of all the power to the dash about 3-4 times within a 10 mile
drive. The engine runs as normal, but i lose the speedo, fuel, rev counter, indicators etc etc.
The only way to get it back is to dip the clutch and turn the ignition off and re-start. This is not ideal, especially with the power steering taking
a couple of seconds to become functional after re-starting.
Has anyone else come across this problem?
I am struggling, because it seems like a bad connection somewhere, but then why would it re-start straight away and only conk out in the mornings (or
at least after the car has been left for a long time)
Any help appreciated.
Funnily enough the warranty just ran out a few months ago
Not really what you expect from a newish car. The problems i have had with this car are unbelievable

3 of my engineers had problerms with there new Vectras, all electrical, engine management lights coming on etc and NO FAULT FOUND by the garage.
I can't tell you what the solutions were, though at lest one was told it is normal!

I wouldn't even want to start listing the problems I had with my 02 plate (new Vectra) none like this though but everything else. lucky it was
aa company car wouldn't of been very happy if it had been mine. Got a new astra now instead, have to wait to see how good it is.

Well apart from the electrical problems. The following things have been wrong:
Leaking back shock absorbers (replaced)
clunking front suspension (inserts required)
rear tyres worn through to wire on inside and almost 4mm on outside
new rear wheel bearings (replaced)
horn going off at random times when car is stopped i.e. 3am usually
horn going off randomly when driving (not good if you are following somone:mad
leaking front windscreen around the interior light fitting
Needless to say i am not very pleased with it so far, i am actually considering changing to a VW or similar.
Vauxhall service is terrible in my opinion as well, the garage i use gave me a courtesy car, which broke down, then they never collected it from the
roadside for over a week and to make matters worse the alarm kept triggering. I phoned then several times and told them to move it, they finally di
move it once the Police made an enquiry
Just a comedy of errors and mistakes so far, i think the car is jinxed
my sister has a 03 Vectra and has had no problems at all though, so maybe my car was built the morning after the staff party or something!
BTW - The engine managment light is on the whole time and when it was at the garage for some of the above reasons the problem couldn't be
rectified. It doesn't seem to cause any direct problems with the engine so i am not too concerned at the moment. Hopefully it will keep going
until i get shot of it.
Anyone want to buy a good reliable car?

A problem that goes away when you switch off the ignition and then on again sounds like an ECU problem not a wiring problem.
ECUs re-initialise themselves at key on. I would look at the instrument cluster first.

Mate had an issue with the speedo cable, it kept breaking on his corsa. When it broke it stopped the whole dash as a safety / security measure.

Get rid of it.
A friend's boy has a three year old Corsa and that had the g/box rebuilt 3 times within 4 months, then replaced with a new one!!!

Being a mechanical engineer i kind of lump anything electrical or electronic under the term 'Wiring'.
If it is the ECU then i assume it will be mucho money to fix/replace.
With all the problems so far i am seriously thinking of just getting shot of the car. The main problem is that they are worth buttons now compared to
what i paid for it 2 years ago. It really frustrates me buying and selling via dealerships, cos whichever way you turn you get mugged and are made to
feel grateful for the mugging.
Might be a case of grin and bear it for a while, till the pennies build up again.
Unless anyone out there has a wonder cure for the car......or a good money making scheme?
