VDO dip tube fuel sender

I've been unhappy with the accuracy of my fuel gauge for a while so I had a look for something else and bought this ....

Image deleted by owner

I'm using Smiths gauges but the swing arm sender supplied isn't rated to less than 180mm depth (my tank is 170mm).

I popped in to Merlin Motorport and lucky for me they had a 166mm dip tube in stock. I bought a VDO gauge to match as the Smiths gauge uses a differnet calibration.

So unfortunately I have a spare Smiths Telemetrix fuel gauge (which I replaced with a voltage gauge, more useful IMO).

I'll mount the VDO gauge off the dash as it doesn't match the others. However it is well damped and to my releif reads the correct fuel level

Good for you. Unfortunately I'm far too impatient to find the right bits in a scrappy. It was there and it did the job

Which probably explains why I built a Striker rather than a locost from scratch!

What resistance does it read full and empty?

I've got one that I'm not sure if its correct or not. It reads 44 ohm empty, and 0 ohm full, is that right?

I need one that reads 40 ohm empty and 180 ohm full ideally, any ideas?

Cheers

There are supposed to be 2 aftermarket standards.

European, 10 - 180 Ohms
US, 240 - 33 Ohms

The Smiths swing arm was near at 18 - 180 Ohms but the VDO used a different rating for the dip tube of I think 0 - 90 Ohms

Cheers for that Bimbleuk,

Does anyone know if you can get VDO dip tube in European resistance standard? I need one 250mm deep to match my Greengauges gauge.

If so where from?

Cheers,

Graham
