rover 214 ignition problems

hello
if anyone has any ideas about this it would be greatly appreiciated!
i've just replaced the engine in my m reg 214, after the old one terminally overheated.
the 'new' engine is from a 214 sei of the same age and has only done 60000 miles.

the problem is that it is only sparking on two spark plugs, numbers 1&4.

its not the spark plugs, coz they are new. its also not the distributor, coz ive tried the distributor from both the new and old engine- which works ok.

i thought it could be the flywheel sensor, but again ive tried both. it could be the ecu, but that is from the old engine and worked fine beforehand.
any ideas?
cheers
andy

Unless you've got a brand new one with DIS ignition you will have a coil and a distributor cap. It as you say is not the ecu cos that does not give that level of control. Therefore it can only be limited items.

Numbers 2 & 3 ignition leads fitted the to the wrong plugs/cap terminals.

or

both 2 & 3 plug leads or plugs faulty.

or

if MPI engine, no 2 & 3 injectors (ignore if single point injection)

Or you've got a terminal problem on no 2 & 3 cylinders. ie compression problems.

Personally I suspect that you've got the plug leads fitted wrongly.

Enjoy.

oh & if you rev the engine by using the thottle body lever it will pop & fart like a goodun cos they've got two throttle positiion switches, one on each end of the cable & they run sick as a pig if only one is opperated.

Oh dear another K series thats overheated and died!
M reg engines are mpi and as Andy says the ecu is not that particular when it fires.
How do you know they are not firing?
Are you physically looking at the plugs out of the engine or are you pulling the leads off?
If you are pulling the leads off it could be an engine fault again.
As Andy says try the obvious stuff first, like swopping the leads around and see what happens.
