wiring up C20XE engine - help needed!
Hi all,
Does anyone have an idiots guide to wiring up the C20XE engine? I've looked at the wiring diagrams in the back of the Haynes manual until I go
cross-eyed, but can't figure it out! Anyone done it before and remember how they did it??
By the way I'm trying to use the standard engine harness and ignition / ECU etc....
Any help gratefully received!
Chris

checkout www.migweb.co.uk , but it is very simple. if you connect more than 4 wires you are doing somthing wrong.
normaly ... it goes like this :
Black wires = igniton +ve
Earth wire to earth
Big red wire to +12v (battery terminal)
there should be a big round connector on your engine loom ,(assuming its all vauxhall still) , one of those wires in the starter motor)
then near the ECU you should have some small plugs , on one of those there should be a think blue/red wire .. thats the fuel pump .... job done

For some reason I think my wiring colours are different to those usually! The SBD website has got a bit on it, but only some of my wires exist....
I'm sure its just a colour change, is there any way of working out what's what??
As you can tell, I'm not great with electricery!

there is a whole load of diagnostic connections that you don't need on the std loom.
Does your loom have the big round plug on it that connects to "the rest of the car"
If so I can give you the pinouts that you need when I get the chance to look in my haynes manual.
rwd mini man is right though, there's revcounter, ign controlled live, permanent live, fuel pump feed and a big earth and that's it.

Thanks for the help!
The 'big connector' has been taken off! (not by me) and I'm left with a lod of wires which don't completely correspond with
expected colours...
The green (tacho) and blue (fuel pump ones are there, as is the big red (permanent live), but I can't work out which one should be ignition
positive due to the colour problem. Not sure which car it came out of as I bought it once it had left its original home!
At work at the moment, but can post a pic later. Will I do any damage by connecting it up wrong, or is it worth experimenting?
Thanks
Chris

Find your haynes manual and look at the ECU main plug on the wiring diagram.
You should be able to trace the main power terminal number on the main plug in the diagram, then use a multimeter set to continuity, stick one test
lead in that terminal in the plug (obviously without the ECU plugged onto it) and check all your unknown wires until you get a beep from the meter,
job done.
If you're struggling I'll check my manual tonight for you and give you the pin number to check through.

Just back from work! (long day!)
I'll take a picture of the wires tomorrow and see if that helps - but could you have a look for the pin numbers to trace - please! I think
I've got the tacho, fuel pump and permanent live ones OK... but the others are still a bit of a mystery (as is the wiring diagram really!)
Thanks

OK...
another evening at it!
Have identified the pin outs from the ECU for all the spare wires I have! From that I have identified the permanent live, a couple of earths, and a
load of other wires that I guess I don't need. Also have got the red/blue wire that feeds the fuel pump.
Fine so far. What I haven't got - and I can't find it, is a black/yellow switched live wire. The pin for it on the ECU is 27, but
nothing on my loom continuity tests with that EXCEPT a single weatherproof plug at the opposite end of the loom to the 'car loom
connector'. Is that it?? sure looks a long way from where the switch would be !!
Feel like we're getting somewhere - but would still appreciate a second (and third!) opinion....
Thanks
Chris
