temp gauge
Run my car up today , was hoping to run it till the fan cut in so i can make sure it al works , with in 2 mins the temp gauge was at the max.
Could it be a faulty sender unit as i tried another gauge and it did exactly the same.
As far as i can see it is wired correct , live feed to one terminal and the feed from the sender to the other terminal , does that sound correct , it
is a crosflow engine .
Many thanks

What sort of temp gauge are you using?
If it's a Classic Smith's type, the Ford sender unit is incompatible with it.
Thanks to Caerbont Automotive Instruments, I can tell you that the characteristics of the sender needed for the old Classic Smith's sender are,
240 ohms at cold, 67 ohms at normal and 20 ohms at hot.

I presume that you have taken the live feed to the gauge from the voltage regulator?
IIRC the output from the regulator should be 10v, but if you're using the old ford mechanical regulator the output voltage is anyones guess. In
this case it's best to dump the old device for a modern solid state affair.

Where is your fan switch located? If it is on top of the thermostat housing, you may have an air lock which will prevent the fan coming on before the
engine boils.

Easy way to check if the gauge is up the swanny. Run engine till gauge shows boiling, put your hand on the top hose, if its so hot you can't
bear to touch it then gauge good, hot but you can just hang on to it, gauge no good, if only luke warn, gauge definately f****d. Hope that helps.

...and if the rad hose is cold, you've got a huge airlock in there, and need to bleed it out....or, the thermostat isn't opening!!!
Sounds like it got hot awfully quick, so I'd be thinkiing thermostat initially (it's generally the cheapest & easiest fix, as well...)
