Imobilisers for all?

Do you need some kinda imobiliser to get past the SVA test?
I remember reading somewhere that you did, but I dunno if this was just to make sure, or if this was to stop them failing you on sight!

Any advice much appreciated,

Mark

Do you need the steering lock then?
I'd rather completely strip down the steering column and just have an ignition switch on the dash. Would this be SVA legal?

I have SVA coming up and was unsure about this. I telephoned the examiner at the SVA station and was told that the steering lock was sufficient.

What qualifies as an immobiliser exactly? Could I get away with any kind of switch in the starter motor circuit?
For anti-theft purposes does it have to be hidden somehow?

If I do have said immobiliser and the steering lock (just to cover all eventualities), can I then fit a push button starter?
Or can I fit one regardless?!

Questions, questions....

We dont have a steering lock- used a sierra col. from a scrappy, no keys so just removed the whole lock mech (our car is Escort based).
For an immobilizer, I bought a "keylock" kit from Maplins- you have to make it yourself (bit of soldering) and it works on the ign. circuit. Pissed the sva guy off as we had to keep re-entering the code, so I think he accepted it immobilised it!

Cheers for the advice so far!

I'll be beginnning my search for a sierra column in a few weeks once uni has had it's pound of flesh... I'm escort based too so it's nice to know it's achieveable!
Any advice on what to keep/not bother with from the sierra?

One final (he says) question:
So if I just wire in some kinda unmistakeable immobiliser into the ignition circuit I can get away without having to have a steering lock fitted to the sierra's column, and pursue my dream of a push-button start?

I just dunno what I'd do without this site...

I certainly hope that a steering lock isn't a requirement! Mine's long gone, as it was placed almost exactly where my knee-cap would be - or at least where it would be when I climb in!

I'm planning to have some form of electronic lock - do you know the maplin code for your keylock, jmb?

Code is VE76H, it's £24.99

Dont try and get it to operate everything- we first wired it up to cut out the main ignition feed, that fed the lights, blower etc etc, and when we went out in the dark and had everything on, it melted the circuit board! Now it just cuts the ign' feed to the coil.
One downside is the 4 digit code is hard-coded by which wires you connect on the board, so make sure you can remember it!

Hi all,

I've got some FIA approved battery cut-off switches, not the cheap and nasty ones - going cheap (actually they go sort of "clunk" when you move the bag - God I'm funny)

Cheap + postage

Mark aren't you in sunny sheff?, I could drop you one off!

Cheers

Chris

I knocked up an immobiliser a year or so back for a mate - it used a touch key (looks luke a fat 5p piece on a key ring) which you press into socket on the dash for a second before driving away. Was dead easy to knock up from a Maplin module, relay and thyristor. Give me a shout if you want a hand with it.

Chris - might be interested in one of your switches for my Fiesta. How much? Can you post a picture?

tell us when the picture's on - I'm definitely interested.

Still up here in sunny Sheffield, but head in a book at the moment due to exams v soon!

Well, I seem to find time for the odd internet shopping spree...

Are the cut-offs done on a key? Sorry, but I dunno much about electrics. Suppose that's all gonna change soon!

Chris,
Don't mean to appear completely ignorant (which of course I actually am) but does it come with instructions?

No worries if not - it surely can't be that complicated to wire in! You just chuck it in-line with the ignition, yeah?

Anyway - I'll take one if that's still ok.
Are you ok to deliver still? (I'm up in Crookes if that helps you make a decision)

Nice nanny by the way...
