who can supply a speedo face?

ok, the plan to drive my speedo via a stepper motor doesn't look like a goer - the motor I have seems to not like going much faster then 2 or 3 Hz - my estimates being I need about 33.

So plan be is to attach a pointer to the motor and move that.

Anyone know who can do a 0-120 mph speed face in 80 mm diameter, with a cutout for odometer? there are people on ebay selling faces that I'll contact.

Other question - is there any circumstances when you would turn off the igniton when still moving? My motor would need to put the needle at 0 mph when I turn the key off (it may look strange - SVA fail - if it shows non-zero when ignition is off.)

(the complexity and unknowns are tending to pointto a non locost route of buying an electronic speedo - who does the cheapest, 80 mm, 0-120 mph)?

ta.

I can (and have) knock up a speedo face in Corel Draw but it is not quite as simple as that as you are no doubt discovering.
You will need to calibrate it, marking all the various readings and transferring them to the CAD version before printing it out.

You are a braver man than I

As far as switching off the ignition while moving - I can't think of any car that will allow you to do this without locking the steering lock ...... which would be interesting

Not necessarily, as long as it is below 10mph mark.
I can't think of any car that will allow you to do this without locking the steering lock Mine doesn't lock till you remove the key.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

callibration should not be too hard; it is the printing that is a problem; the best I can do is print onto paper that doesn't llok too good.

oh, and there is still the problem of the sensor.

I'll be selling a full set of new Tiger dials soon, as I'm going the Digidash route.

a steper not fast enough??

If you could make 1 turn in 1 sec..

then you can point the needle at 220Km/h..

from 0 in 1 sec..
isn't that fast enough???

after that the stepper can make 1,3degrees steps..

cant see the problem..

The dials would be just a paint job
cant be to hard either..

Tks

Print onto paper and then laminate it - I've done it and you can't tell the difference when it is mounted in the speedo.

no, that was plan A; the stepper was to drive a cable driven speedo.

Print onto overhead projector film (get the correct stuff for you printer). Then maybe paint the back?

I had wondered about using the CNC at work to engrave one..

I'd go with that option. OHP film, nice dark laser printer toner (some of the inkjet inks fade in UV light and aren't waterproof- not good if you get a humid guage).... Paint the back with white paint.... Jobs a good'un...

You can get printers that print on cds so in theory they should work on anything you shove through them

Sorry, just a thought...Rather than trying to make your own guage can you not use a some seven segment LED desplays and drive them with the signal from the sensor?....could be acurate to 1MPH and easily callbrated..

Not true, I have a CD printer that will print any CD, proper TDK jobbie.

Only does black but very professional.

Clive at Custom Solutions will engrace you a speedo face in ally or stainless..........usual caveat, not cheap, but awesome quality!!

Have you thought of using a small brushless motor as used in model aircraft? apparently Cd drive motors can also be rewound to give more power and can be driven from a speed controller controlled by the output from the radio reciever which is a digital signal.
It may not be locost however but is a possibility.
How are you planning on getting the stepper motor to just work in a 270 degree arc rather than a full revolution?
I would like to do something similiar but haven been able to find out how to drive a stepper in that fashion.

he sepper motor will be moved by a step (need to get a 1.8 degree that would give me better thant 1 mph resolution, of hafl that if using half-stepping mode).

counting the steps to move the pointer round the face shouldn't be too taxing; there needs to be some sort of limit switch/sensor at 0 mph so that the pounter can be put into a know position.

7 segment & other digital displays - if I am to go that route, cheaper and easier to stick in a bike speedo; I';d much rather prefer a dial but there's gonna be a point that once I have may wing stays done, I'm going for SVA retest so whatever will be quickest at that point in time.
