Sierra Loom

Whats to stop me just using the loom off the donor vehicle, as long as i label it when i take it out, if im using the pinto, surely everything should just match up?

Thats exactly what I am going to do, my sierra ghia has loads of unwanted circuits and these will have to be cut out, also a funny little box that indicates if any bulbs have blown (still scratching head over that one!)

if its anything like the loom that came out of my granada, you would be friggin NUTS
to use it.

The whole thing is REALLY heavy and has a heck of a load of redundant wiring and connectors. Unless you want a 4 speaker stereo, leccy windows, a 3 speed heater, dim dip lighting, 75 relays, de da de da de da.

There is a fair chance its gonna be too long in places and too short in others. And then theres the fuse box. A really big chunk of crap that has most wiring eminating from it.

If you really cant deal with electrics, its a way to go. As would be buying a loom.

It took me 25% of the total time stripping the donor to get my loom out of the car - so I could use it as a 'map' and seperate the bits I needed - which were just ABS and EFI.

The rest of the stuff like lighting, horn etc I did with new wire.

If you have it off the car I respect your decision. If you havnt, take a good look at it and make your mind up then.

If you are gonna use the original dash pod - inc the little bulb fail box, then perhaps its a bit more worth it....

Or perhaps a sierra has a much smaller, less covered in crap loom than my donor had.....

Ill have a look what condition it is in, if its too heavy/long/complex i will use it as a map for my own. I think i will do it in one colour to save money, using heatshrink tubes at the end to colour code it, as has been discussed on here.

I dont really want to spend £100+ on some wiring i can do myself. im off uni in 2 weeks so ive got over 3 weeks to sort out the sierra before i get the kit.

When I built my Robin Hood I stripped the Sierra loom out and used it but my sierra wasn't efi and wasn't fitted with leccy windows etc so I didn't seem to have too many spare wires!

It also seemed to be pretty much the right size.

However, this time around I bought a premier wiring loom but that's because the Ford Escort loom in my Dutton had been hacked about over the years and I'm trying to fit an efi lump.

I'd try the sierra loom, you can always chuck it away later.

having just spent 3 evenings carefully removing the loom from my sierra 20.l EFi Ghia... I can confirm that it is just as heavy and unwieldy as the granada's !
It has redundant wires in spadefuls!

personally i am now going to remove the engine harness section and then slavage all connectors. the rest I will keep for now - you never know the wires may come in handy.

Yup, I haven't even bothered taking the loom out of my sierra, it's a pretty lowly spec, the only extra being ABS, and it still has about a 3 inch solid block of wire mingling around the dash. I think I'll stick with nice new, thin, light wires of the correct length in a loom that only has what I need.

Thats exactly what I did.

My loom came in three separate-able (!) bits.

EFI / engine
ABS
the rest

I used EFI and ABS

but kept the rest until I was sure I didnt need anything else. Junked it months ago. Prob gonna find I need summat vital any day!
